Day in the Life? Brown Students!

Hi, I was wondering what a typical “day in the life” of a brown student is like during the school year. Any description would be helpful! thanks all!

This is a good question to ask! I’m a rising sophomore so I can give you an idea of what a typical day was like for me during my freshman year. These details will be pretty specific to me, and the daily experiences of others may be vastly different.

Weekdays:
I’d wake up at 10:30, and eat something small on the way to an 11am class (though I’ve had my first class of the day be as early as 10am and as late as 1pm). After class I’d have lunch at the V-Dub (one of the two major dining halls) during a free hour from 12 to 1. Sometimes I’d eat it in the dining hall with some friends, other times I’d get it to-go and take it to my room, where I’d watch a TV show like The Office or The Daily Show with my roommate while eating. After another class or two in the early afternoon, the rest of the day varied hugely, and it’d be hard to peg one particular set of activities as “typical.” I was a TA for a Computer Science class last semester so I’d often hold TA hours from 4-6. I’m also in a dance group so a few days a week I’d have practice, though that was usually later at night, at around 9 or 10. I also was involved in some other activities (acting in student films, for instance) that could take up time in the afternoon. Of course there was always some time devoted to homework, and there were a couple crazy days where I spent the entire afternoon and evening working on a computer science project or studying for a test. If the day wasn’t as busy, I’d take a nap, and occasionally I found something else to do, like attending a campus performance or a talk by someone interesting visiting campus. We get an email every morning with a lot of events around campus, so if I saw something interesting I’d usually try to attend. Almost always I found an hour to sit down at the V-Dub at around 5 or 6 and have dinner with a few friends. At night, my roommate and I stayed up pretty late, and we often had visitors hanging out in our room till 2am or so. We’d usually grab a late-night meal at The Gate (a nearby campus food place open till 2), and go to bed shortly thereafter.

Weekends:
Wake up in the early afternoon (I’m not a morning person), and meander over to the Blue Room or the Ratty for lunch. Usually spend an hour or two on homework, but mostly just hang out or go to an activity I have scheduled for that day. I typically “went out” to find a party or something along those lines once a week, on Friday or Saturday night. The other night I’d still hang out with some friends, but in a more relaxed way. Maybe go to a performance, like a comedy show. On Sunday night I usually went rock climbing at the Providence climbing gym with the Outing Club from 8 to 11.

I hope this was somewhat interesting or useful! I know just writing this got me a little more excited to head back in a week or two!

Thanks!! That was VERY helpful and sounds fun! :)

Is this description a typical day for most students attending Brown University?

NDivymom: not really, just because we’re all vastly different people. One of the best things about college, in my opinion, is the ability to match your schedule to what you want to do and when you work best.

I often get up at 9 for a shift working in one of the campus eateries, then have class until 2 or 3 pm. I tend to study in the later afternoon, then after dinner go to orchestra rehearsal some days, or do more studying if I don’t have an event in my program house. I’m also an early sleeper, so it’s unusual for me to be up past midnight unless I have a lot of work to do for the next day.

Thank you Bruno14! I am pleased that Brown students can participate in outside activites in addition to their studies. It sounds like you and heinzketchup have found a way to balance all of your interests.
