A friend who is a senior in high school applying to college found out that she will need to take a W in the community college class that she has been taking. She just got some test scores back from the Calculus class and discovered that she would almost definitely fail the class. I think that it is best for her to take the W, but she's not sure what this is going to do to her admissions chances. She has a decent GPA (4.0 weighted), a good SAT score, and good extra-curriculars, but she is afraid that this will kill her chances at quite a few colleges. She isn't even sure if she should still apply to UCLA/USC. I never had to personally deal with this situation, so does anyone have any advice about what I should tell her...

A “W” is nothing to worry about. It has no effect on your GPA and will not conflict in her application process.
