Dean Scholars 2018

cdkmom - While we wait for DS results, can you please tell us about your older sons DS experience ? Did he get any merit scholarships (from the Turing thread it seems like he did)?
I know about 40 get into DS every year. Is it true half of them get merit based scholarship ?
Anything you can say from your personal perspective will be helpful. TIA

My S had a great experience with DS. He chose the program over Duke and Rice. He was pre-med, but the year he started at UT, they did not have the Health Science Honors program in place yet. So DS was the best place for him. He did get a scholarship from DS, but more importantly, being a part of DS was the catalyst for many additional scholarships/awards while he was at UT. I have been told that about half of the DS’s get merit aid, but I don’t have personal knowledge of that. Back then, scholarships ranged from a full-ride (only 1 or 2 people, I think) all the way down to 1/4 tuition. My son did research from his freshman year forward and had paid research internships every summer at UT, which was nice from the money standpoint and also looked very good on his med school apps. He was very well prepared to apply to med school by the program and after taking a gap year to work at a local hospital, he will be heading off to med school next Fall. My S said being in DS was like studying at a small private university, while still enjoying the many advantages of a large university like Texas. It’s a great program.

@cdkmom, thanks a lot. This is what I expected on the DS program. My daughter’s career goal is an MD, too. I am still trying to convince my daughter to go to UT if she gets DS along with good merit scholarship. She already got accepted in PLan II of UT and received an acceptance letter from U of Chicago with a smal merit scholarship. I will respect her decision eventually, though.

FYI, DS acceptance emails have been sent out and letters were mailed today.

My friend received an email. I didn’t. Does anyone know if they sent them out all at the same time?

wow. None from CC who have got the email on DS ?

studentinhs:

Do you mind me asking if you got a DS acceptance or if you just heard about it from someone who did? It’s kind of strange that there are no CC students on this thread saying they received an acceptance email/letter. And does anyone know whether or not they still send out more than one batch of acceptances? I know that they did about 4 years ago.

I received the email from the director of CNS Honors. A friend of mine also received an acceptance email from DS. The director said letters were mailed out “today” (Friday). Not sure about the batches, but time is winding down, as the session for accepted DS students at UT Austin is in early February.

Congratulations!! My daughter didn’t receive any email yet, although we had a confidence in getting into DS. The DS is a great program for students to have a private college-level education at low cost, while enjoying advatages of a state-flag public university. Hope UT didn’t release all of DS acceptances. :)

Same, I’m with you. Still waiting for my email. Fingers crossed that they haven’t sent out all of them yet.

Would the email be sent to the email used for the ApplyTexas application, or is there some UT Austin student email account that we need to be checking?

email used with ApplyTexas app

My daughter still didn’t receive any email on CNS honors (;none of Dean’s, Health Science, & Polymathic scholars). She applied before Oct 15/2013 same time as Plan II honors which already accepted her with late November notice (thru mail). BTW, her stat is really good (;Perfect SAT and Rank within 1% in a nationally well recognized high school). Do you think CNS honors office will not accept applicants who may not enroll in UT ? She got accepted to Univ of Chicago (EA) but placed UT over U Chicago if UT accepts her in honors college (Plan II + Dean’s) along with good merit scholarship. This was why I forced her to apply UT’s honors college. But so far, UT meets only one condition(Plan II) among the three conditions for her to be a Longhorn. :(

I thought you could only apply to one college-wide honors program? i.e. you can only apply to one of DS, health, or polymathic?

@studeninhs, One CNS honors application covers all three as I know. But only one honors program is allowed among DS, HSS, and PMS. The other colleges’ honors program like business, engineering, LAC honors can be allowed with the CNS honors.
@crrnstdent, Thanks for the info. Wish my daughter be in the next DS wave. If not, she will leave UT behind.

What did crrnstdent say?

crrnstdent deleted his post. As I remember, there would be a a couple of waves in DS release in previous years in his post. Since he deleted his post, the info is not reliable anymore. However, I don’t believe how UT doesn’t give DS acceptance to a perfect SAT/GPA applicant. So, I still don’t lose my hope that there would be a wave.

Dad2013 - I sent an email to them and they confirmed what you are saying - decisions sent in waves in no particular order of priority.

@yetanotherid, Good job on getting a confirmation from CNS office. Since CNS honors is my daughter’s application, not mine, it’s hard to ask her to contact the admission office, distracting her from school activities and other. Your post relieved me. :)

That’s good news. I guess the next question to ask is, around when should we expect the next wave to come? Considering the Deans Scholar orientation is February 7, should it not come within the next 10 days?
