UT CS Turing Scholars - Class of 2021 Thread

Has anybody got acceptance from Turing Scholars yet ? Curious to know if you were admitted to CS Major OR are there people from other majors as well ? I hear that the Turing reception is on Feb 20 for the admitted students, so the notifications should be sent out soon, if not already sent out.
If you are accepted to Turing program, can you share the date you got notification and your Major ?

I got Turing in mid-December, major was Computer Science (I’m pretty sure you need a CS major?).

Unless you meant the date I got my major… that was late November.

Congratulations @ryanyz10
FAQs from Turing site below kind of tells me that one can be doing other major (say Math, ECE etc) and can still do Turing.

Can I be in the Turing Scholars Honors Program and also be in one of the other Honors programs at UT, such as Dean’s Scholars or Plan II?

Yes. You are free to apply to as many Honors programs as fit your needs. We have many students who are participating in two honors programs and have even had a few participate in three.

Can I double major in CS and some other major if I join the Turing Scholars Honors Program?

Yes. We have students who are double-majoring in CS and other majors including Chemistry, Biology, Business, Math, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Plan II.

@bz3mvl Oh, that’s interesting. I don’t really know how it works, since I was sure I was doing a CS major anyways.

Does anyone know how many people were admitted to the Turing program last year? The only thing I’ve heard so far is that the number was below 100.

I heard 50 enrolled last year. Not sure how many acceptances were sent out though.

Their site says 150 enrolled currently, so 38/class. Acceptance rate, number of acceptances (and thus yield), and average SAT or GPA is unknown.

DS currently a Turing freshman. I believe at the open house they said approx. 80 were accepted to the program. I think there are around 45ish that actually enrolled.

@bookmom7 Thanks for the info!

Thanks @bookmom7 for the info. if it is not too much of trouble, Can you ask DS if there are any enrolled Turing freshmen who are not from CS Degree i.e from other degrees such as ECE/Cockrell or Maths/CNS or some other degrees. It appears from Turing FAQs that this is similar to Plan II or Dean Scholors Program, but I have not been able to verify that by talked to CNS office. Thanks in advance!

Well @bz3mvl - actually DS was admitted as a Physics major w/ CS as his second choice. I am not sure if he is the only one. I will ask.
(He is also a Deans Scholar.) This fall he actually also added Math into the mix. Very busy. :slight_smile:

For those who got a letter in the mail from Turing, was there a handwritten note or just the generic letter? Thanks

Thanks @bookmom7 . After he got admitted to Turing,
did he continue in Physics Major
OR
did he transfer to CS Major
OR
did he do Double Major in Physics and CS ?

Seems from your response that he added Math also in his degree plan, that is awesome. he seems very motivated.

@bzemvl- he is working on both majors.

I’m anxious for all of you to get a CNS honors decision. Wishing you all the best of luck.

Does anyone know when Turing scholarship decisions will be released? OOS, so I need the $$.

Check tomorrow night, but don’t expect anything definitive until March 1st. Also, Turing doesn’t really do scholarships and it would be unlikely for OOS too. Consider a in-state tuition exemption if you get into honors

Has anyone heard if they are still making decisions for Turings? I heard the list had been finalized, but they may not have sent everyone a notification.

@nalexg34 I wouldn’t worry about it until you get an acceptance/rejection. I know people with very high scores (some perfect) who haven’t heard back yet.

@nalexg34 @Aristos
There is a Turing Orientation event for admitted students on 20th Feb, so that probably means if you haven’t heard back yet, you didn’t get in.

@STEMdude Damn… RIP us. Was really considering Turing @ UT as my first choice. Hopefully Dean’s Scholar will go through for me [-O<
