Has anyone applied for Dean's Scholar (or HSH) as a transfer? If so, how hard is it to get in? What do they primarily look at when reviewing your application? (I'm doing CAP at UTSA next year)

It’s apparently more difficult to get in as a transfer.
I know somebody who didn’t make it in until his 3rd application, and he was pretty outstanding with his 4.0 and involvement in research, extracurriculars etc… back in HS he got into a couple of top 10 schools.

HSH was just founded last year so I doubt anybody can tell you about transferring into there yet.

Wow, didn’t know it was that hard; then I might as well apply to some top 20 schools as well… ( I’ll have better chances there, eh?)

You don’t have to be in an honors program to participate in undergrad research, develop relationships with instructors, receive departmental scholarships, or to graduate with honors. Why is an honors program so important to you?

can you only become Dean’s scholar in Freshman year or do you get other opportunities after the first year?

zlc is correct. My son has already started working in the BME lab, and this is his freshman year. He’s not getting paid at this point, but he’s gaining valuable experience and he enjoys it! You just have to be proactive and ASK!!

@zlc
DS has around 85% going to their first choice med schools. I think that’s a good enough reason to apply to that program.

@Maine Longhorn
I’m not saying a normal undergraduate degree will hinder you from research or a respectable medical school, but the above statistics are just too enticing to pass on an application.

You have to have excellent stats to get into DS even as an entering freshman. My son was not accepted into it, and his stats were pretty good! He ended up going into engineering, anyway.

I believe that the high acceptance rate has more to do with the quality of the students than the DS program itself.

Yeah, it look hyper-competitive… almost as hard as getting into Ivy’s. I just want to know what it takes to get into the program, even HSH.

no one here transferred?

If I go to UT this fall as a freshman regular student in CNS and I apply to Deans Scholar as a transfer/sophomore. Is it more difficult to get in?
I didnt get into Dean’s Scholars this year but I got into some Top 20 schools which I am considering. Do UT students generally find it easier to get in Dean’s Scholars Honors as a sophomore?

BUMP this thread.
