Dear Admissions Daniel (Transfer Question),

I'm currently a freshman at Northwestern University. A full courseload here is 4 credits a quarter. 1 hard-core class is normally 1 credit. For example I am taking:
Organic Chemistry, French, Linear Algebra/Multivariable Calculus, Freshman Seminar, and Orchestra. All of those courses are 1 credit courses except for Orchestra, which is 0.5 credits.

I completed 5 credits Fall Quarter. I am taking 4.5 Credits this quarter and am planning all taking 4.5 credits during spring quarter for a total of 13 credits. I also have 8 credits from AP tests. For a total of 21 credits by the end of my freshman year. Does the 24 credit policy apply to schools like Northwestern who have very different credit schemes?

The 24 credit policy does not apply to schools with unique credit systems like Northwestern, Brown, and other similar schools. If you have completed a year of work at Northwestern you are eligible to apply for transfer to JHU.

Before transferring to JHU, my S spent a term at a top LAC which counted each semester course as 1 unit. However, if you searched their Registrar website/transcript description, they did specify that they considered each unit the equivalent of 4 credits in the system more commonly in use at other colleges/universities.

So you might search or call the Registrar's office to see what they believe each 1 credit at your school equates to on the "1 class hour = 1 credit" system used at most places.
