Please put yourself in a parent’s shoes and tell us three things you would do for your college freshman before he/she leaves for college?
- Offer love and support, and tell them that you are there for them if they fall.
- Perhaps throw a surprise (or regular) graduation party? I think those are always nice, especially if it is with friends. I always wish I had one more opportunity to celebrate with some friends before leaving.
- Discuss the importance of mental health and living a balanced lifestyle – grades and other things should not come above being well as a person.
-
You can always call us when you feel homesick, or we can take you home from time to time if you don’t move too far away from us.
-
College is not like high school at all. It’s a whole new ball game and it will take some time to get used to (the classic 1st year adjustment period)
-
Have a balance between your school work and free time: Make sure that you study and get all of your work done so you don’t fall behind. You can still attend parties, but I advise you not to drink until you’re of age.

- Make sure they know how to order their own prescriptions, use an ATM, wash clothes, address a letter, write a check.
- Spend time with them doing fun things.
