What are some things that you would recommend me to do the summer before college?
I am currently thinking about skimming some textbooks that the college uses, taking some summer courses, and volunteering.
Thank you in advance. Any opinions are appreciated.

Make time for your high school friends and your family. It’s the last time you’ll have before your relationship changes with all of them.
For your friends, far fewer people will make the effort to hang out once you’re at college, especially if you were only okay friends, and not best friends.
Your family is still your family, but the dynamic changes. My mom removed my curfew and is completely okay with me drinking, as long as I’m safe about it. She treats me as much more of an equal since I’ve come back than she did last summer. Your parents may end up smothering you (as mine did near the end) but it’s because they don’t know how to deal otherwise.

karabee:
Thank you
Honestly, I didn’t think about that.

I second karabee’s suggestion but I never really had a social life in high school. However, I would also recommend you taking a vacation with the family. It’s the best time to go somewhere if you can afford it because later on you would have to do internships.

I couldn’t get a job before college, so I spent it having fun and volunteering. Live it up, you have your college summers to do everything else. But skimming textbooks if you have time isn’t a bad idea. If you want, communicate with your roommate and get a sense of what you need to bring.

SCHOLARSHIPS. Don’t end up like me!!! scholarship money is much much harder if you’re already in college.

Apply your butt off and get as many applications in as you can.

Last summer, all I did was either work or play video games.

Enjoy it. These next few summers will be the last time you have to enjoy yourself as a kid.

And yes, I do agree. Many high school era friendships do end once everyone goes off to the university. Find some time to hang out with the best of them.

As a person with no social life whatsoever (I mean zilch - no outside of school contact with anybody inside school except Facebook since 2006… lol), I know that I’ll be doing summer courses or something to adjust to life in the US.

Have fun. Legally you’re likely an adult now, but I highly doubt you have adult responsibilities.

All of the above, plus find a job. Take some of the financial responsibilities. Learn first hand what the job market is like these days, and what it is like to work a job.

Take summer classes to improve your education. Learning is never ending.

Just have a good time! Everyone is right when they say this is your last chance to be care free and have no responsibilities!

I took up scuba diving the summer before college

If you don’t have one, yet, get a checking account. If you do have one, learn how to balance it. (It will pay off later on!)

Wow thank you all for the advice.

party, this is the last time you probably be able to spend time with all your high school friends at the same time, so use it well and party all day and night. Trust me you will not regret it.

If there’s a cool local CC class you want to take, go for it, but don’t approach it as “Hey, I’ll get some credits out of the way.” This is your last summer with friends, your last summer under the rule of your parents–at least as you know it now–and the first summer you have without obligations like summer assignments and the nagging “how will this look on college applications?” So sneak out, skinny dip, drink (responsibly), go on spontaneous vacations, etc.

Have as much fun as you can.

If you live in the dorms, stock up on ear plugs, and canned goods. This will help you the first few days because you will probably not have enough time to eat while you unpack.

Learn how to do your laundry if you don’t know how.

Tour the campus and visit the building where your classrooms are if you are attending school near home.

Go to freshman orientation if your school offers it.

Buy a planner because you will need it during school.

Get to know your roommate

Make sure your financial aid is in order

why would you want to do anything?
stay at home, relax, do nothing. probably the last chance you’ll get in a while, if not ever.

obviously socialize as well, i mean no need to do anything “productive”

Don’t sneak out, actually go out with your friends. Skinny dip?? seriously? that’s the dumbest thing ever. Underage drinking is irresponsible. Spontaneous vacations might be fun though

^Get the stick out of your butt. He’s just telling the OP to live vicariously, by one means or another.
