Debate - Lincoln Douglas

Hello,

How does one go about finding a private coach? Also what would be the best resources for prep as the school does not have a coach.

Thanks!

Please clarify your question. What are you looking for…what does “Debate LD” mean, and how does that relate to your question in your post. What kind of coach are you seeking?

Try these folks! We had the same issue when my DS was in high school, although he did Congressional. But he skyped with one of these coaches and it helped!

What is this poster taking about??? If there is some clarity in the question, there will likely be more good responses.

LD is Lincoln Douglas. It is a particular kind of debate at high school speech and debate competitions. The OP likely didn’t realize that many people , whose children are not involved in debate, would not be familiar with this term.

OP, I don’t know about private coaching, but lots of universities have summer debate camps. Good luck!

If the school does not have a coach, how do you even have a team? Or is your kid debating on his/her own? Is there a nearby school that has a team? You can sometimes join one – or the coach of that team might be able to suggest local resources. Is there a college nearby with an LD team? I’ve never known a college debater who didn’t like to make some extra money. As @Aida noted, there are many summer institutes, but many of them are competitive. At this point, you’re about halfway through the season, so I’m wondering if you’re talking about this year or looking forward to next year.

I see LD and think Learning Differences.

@AboutTheSame , School does have a team and lets kid participates in speech, debate - all kinds. However, it is run as a club- so funding is limited. There are a couple of coaches but they are not proficient with every kind of debate.

It seems after trying to understand the mechanics that one need a coach or a summer camp. Summer camps are are far away both distance and timewise, and also extremely pricey. I thought of finding a private coach, who could help out.

Yes. The camps are very pricey. I hear you. So is traveling to tournaments, but it doesn’t sound as though the school is competing on the national circuit. There are camp scholarships available, but they go quickly, and you still have transportation to deal with.

You and your debater may find some helpful resources here: https://www.speechanddebate.org/ and, more specifically, here: http://debate-central.ncpa.org/ld/

I’m afraid I have no clues about finding a coach who could help from a distance. LD is a very specialized form of debate (my D did Policy so I can sympathize) and not something that a coach used to working with some of the other varieties would necessarily be much help with. If my thought about a nearby college debater is no good, I’m out of ideas.

Best of luck, ATS
