opened ports

letitbestan08- tokugawa was fear of european religion and intervention or something

it was from CB practice tests or Barron's

yup, arabs and africans

How come it is not Hong Kong?

hong kong to britain was result of opium war
portugese negotiated port opening
nanjing created ports

tokugawa did not want euro ideals in the country

1600 colonization: it's Portuguese. man, this is depressing

btw for treaty of nanking, i was doing math.
i added 99 to whatever the year was, and figured that it wasnt in 1990s (i remembered that it was kinda recent that it became china's), so i put opened 5 ports lol

Question about assyrians? any one remember?

1600 colonization: it's Portuguese. man, this is depressing
-> are we sure about this?
I was thinking between britian & portugal, and guessed portugal

i think its britain
and assyrians was that they had a rockin military

yeah assyrians - militaty
lets confirm the 1600 colonization question.
Britian or Portugal? anyone has some resources?

Practice Tests;

Barrons: 690, 630
Collegeboard: 800, 800
Real One: Prob 800 (According to this thread I prob got a total of 5 wrong)

^ agree to teh above, it wasnt the 99 year lease. That deal was between Britain and the Republic of China I believe, not during the Opium War.

Yes About the Tokuwaga, after the Shimara Rebellion they hated Europeans.

For the most dominant colonizing nation I put Spain, because at the time Britain and the rest of europe had no empire besides little islands in the middle of nowhere and some American colonies, and Portugal only had pathetic Brazil, while Spain had almost all the Carribean and South America. Portugal didnt have a significant empire, and neither did Britain, France, or any other of the choices except Spain. Spain only began to lose it's empire in the 1800s due to the decline caused by Phillip II. (AP Euro knowledge = helpful =D)

What about the Jesuit one? I said introduced chinese thought into Europe (Marco polo brought descriptions but not ideas) because the Jesuits had no political influence and didn't suceed in converting a significant amount of ppl or opening ports. That was because of the Opium War, not the Jesuits.

I think it's spain, considering it had almost the entire south/central america by 1600. British didn't expand yet, the portuguese only had brazil and a few other african colonies.

I agree it's Spain. I think Spain has the largest colony in 1600s.

Yes, that's what i put too--introduced chinese thought into Europe.

Question--why did portugal explore the Indian ocean during the 15/16th century?

yeah for jesuits, introducing chinese thought to europe.
i got 3 wrong so far.

when the jesuits came, in particular matteo ricci, they brought items that the chinese were impressed by-ie mechanical clock.
as a result they allowed exclusive trade with specific countries.. which led to all the other stuff about trade and china

The Treaty of Nanking answer choices are too ambiguous I think. Both ports and Hong Kong are included part of the treaty.

portugese i said so they didnt have to deal with the ottomans

The maps and quotes on this test were surprisingly pretty straight forward.
