December 2009 SAT Writing Thread

what did you end up writing about? I ended up using 1984 by george orwell even though i’ve never read it and don’t even remember the main character’s name… plus i used the american revolution but i think i was stretching it there

Same! I didn’t read the book either. And I’m not quite sure how I came up with the american revolution. Lets just say this isn’t going to be my best essay…

For the essay, I used examples like Stalin and Mussolini wire tapping phones (I’m assuming they did?) and I talked about how people fought and died to give us the freedom of privacy. It was pretty powerful stuff.

It’s a little annoying how you can pretty much only argue one way on EVERY SAT prompt. Whos gonna say convenience > privacy? Did anyone?

I said basically that modern technology tries to emulate face to face communication, but it could never replicate it.

So, friendship is just as hard or harder to maintain with more technology…

This essay seriously threw me off, though… I BSed way more than I would have wanted to.

It was like 3rd to last. The one about leakage and the mainland… was C the error? “with”

Yeah it was “with”. There should have been an “and” there. Blah blah blah between the island AND the mainland.

i dont remember the sentence. Do you know any more of it?

I can’t remember exactly what the sentence said now but it talked about how oil spills were affecting the sea otters on the island I think…

I remember i was gonna put NE on the sci fi one and the revolution one, but I hate putting 2 NE in a row, since no error is pretty rare =/

OHHH it was with, because it said “THE RIVER SEPERATED, clause about otters, WITH THE MAINLAND” if you disregard the otter BS it should say seperated FROM not with

Hmm, I think you’re right about from. =_=’ Well, at least I picked the right answer choice.

2 omits, 2-3 wrong, and a 9-10 on the essay [at best]… score??

I’d estimate 680 if its a similar curve to last month’s

Is this the consensus for the NE ones

The NE ones I thought were

"Contrary to perception, science fiction, blah blah, using futurism as a means of exploring the present - no error

On the eve of the American Revolution, Europeans confidently decared that… - no error

A wingspan of 8 feet makes the bird, … - no error"

A wingspan of 8 feet makes the bird, … - no error"

^I’m pretty sure this one had an error. But it was phrased differently than that. The error was like ambiguity with the wingspan. I would elaborate if I could remember the entire question…

I thought it was like

A wingspan of 8 feet makes the bird the largest species on the globe. Something like that.

The Q was like The bird had a wingspan of 8 ft, once spanning across north america, making it the largest species or something. I’m not really sure anymore but I didn’t put NE.

I did :-X I talked about ancient Rome’s public bathhouses / bathrooms / entertainment (gladiatorial games) and how it benefited every individual at the cost of privacy… and then I talked about the advantages of the lack of privacy in the crucible (Proctor’s secret) and the grapes of wrath (Joads sharing with other Okies)… and the said that reflected the lack of advantage in privacy >__<

I’m very nervous now.

Sorry for double posting.

For the Winston Churchill question and how he developed intelligence at a late age, but was incredible smart, did anyone else pick the awkward beginning?

What’s the best I could get with -2 and about an 8-9 essay? Last time I got a perfect MC and a 9 essay and got 800, so would it go down dramatically or slightly?

It would go down to around 740
