December SAT International Test Discussion

WOW! Great work Eralc! What a champion! :D

@lord
i think i got that one wrong. what were the other choices or what was the question if anyone remebers?

was ‘spontaneity’ an answer for a SC?

ErialC, that’s some impressive work ;)

Some points:

Passage about water: “Form” was the answer for the passage about Montaigne, which most nearly means “Compose”.

Passage about African-American author: “it leaves no room for books other than approved by critics.” - Did anyone answer “It ignores the subjective interpretation of books”?

Passage that was an extract from the french philosopher Montaigne: “Aversion to public display” and “Witty dismissiveness”

“- no external pleasure can be greater than that derived from isolation.” - Did anyone not choose this? I think my answer was E, something about modifying one’s character.

2 passages about the commercialisation of universities: “Direct quotation”

Question: What does the author do in the last paragraph of passage 2? Was it “Introduce a new hypothesis”? I answered “Debate an issue”. The “Yet” in the middle of the paragraph was what made me believe he was debating.

Can anyone remember which section Alex the Parrot falls under?

Also, what’s SC? :</p>

I didn’t choose the external pleasure derived from isolation. Chose the self-reflection and improving one’s character, like you.
For that I thought it was a tossup between acknowledging a historic force or introducing a hypothesis. Not too sure though.
Alex the Parrot was writing.

Does anyone remember what was the answer to the reflected circle problem? I got 8, but I think I made a stupid mistake.

@nitcomp:

I think the SC you’re referring to is Mary’s (?) uninhibited personality made her ideal for the spontaneity the role required.

I’m not sure why I keep thinking the blank was for “uninhibited”, but there was a spontaneity in there, IIRC…

@mihaelautza:

I believe the answer was 10. The radius of the circle is irrelevant; it’s center is (3,5), so if reflected in the x-axis the new center would be (3, -5), thus the distance between the two centers = 5 - (-5) = 10.

@peaches134:
agree on spontaneity and 10

I couldn’t decide between “isolation” and “self improvement”, but I chose “isolation” one.

I put “it leaves no room for books other than approved by critics.”

I answered “Debate an issue”,too.
@lemonade
IMO, “introduce a hypothesis” is wrong. not sure about the “history force” one

I’m not an expert at CR. I’m usually borderline 700, so correct me if I’m wrong

For the isolation one, I just recalled the question
The question quoted “most pleasure are digested inwardly”
When the lines are quoted, we need to ignore the rest of the passage
This sentence doesn’t say anything about the improvement
That’s my reasoning. Could be wrong

For that question, I put, “because selfish pleasures are the most pleasant”. Can anyone tell me why this is wrong? I don’t think that the main point of the passage was about isolation…

my reason exactly. :D

theskylitup,what’s your opinion on the “Debate an issue” or “Acknowledge a historical force” one?

^ I think I put “acknowledge a historical force” - but which passage/question was this in relation to?

Dang… alright then.

What about the African-American book question on “literary standard”? Did no one else answer “It ignores the subjective interpretation of the books”?

@theskylitup: It was in relation to the last paragraph of passage 2, “It might be true that… Yet…”

And another one: “Commercial engagement” most nearly means “Involvement” or “Pledge”?

all your memory skills amaze me, really.
@peaches: EEEP!!! i meant 54, 54, sorry!!
and yeah, i put historical too, i forget what the question was though, lol.

@peaches
I put involvement

Oh. Acknowledge a historical force…
I got 6 wrong. so borderline 700 now.

peaches - I would say involvement.

This was the question that referred to the critic’s “canon” and the way the author feels his tastes would be considered “execrable” according to critical standards. These two elements lead to the answer which is that the canon/literary standards leaves no room for other tastes. The subjective interpretation thing is true, but isn’t stated explicitly in the text. (Hope that explaination helped).

wait.
Why is “debate an issue” wrong? Can anyone explain please?

theskylitup: That makes enough sense, thanks!

Erialc: I answered “Debate an issue”, which I believe is right, because it referred specifically to the last paragraph. The format “It might be true… Yet…” suggested debate, with a proposition, then a counter-argument.

Btw, I got 5 incorrect on my January SAT, but got a 740 CR score, so you’ll probably be okay.

Math:

the fish problem, correct answer is: 54
the circle reflected, correct answer is: 10
a<b<c<d<e, correct answer is: A
the square pyramid Q… the area is 16??
some of the grid - in Qs: I remember 1st Q is 9.

any1 would like to add?

I remeber a Q that was talking about a set of numbers from 1 to 50 blah blah blah was the answer I and III only???
