“By” is wrong because it is an explanatory word, necessitating that the phrase that comes before it discusses a process, which in this case it doesn’t: “Mark Spitz was the most decorated winner of the Olympics” is a state. If the preceding phrase was something like “Mark Spitz became the most decorated winner of the Olympics”, then I think “by” would have been correct.

theskylitup:
do you remember what the other options were for that expectation vs. reality one?
btw, sorry haven’t replied to your pm. got a physics exam tomorrow and cramming :(

No I don’t sorry, for this question I just zero-ed in on expectation vs. reality straight away.

(anyone else remember though- feel free to weigh in!)

but my reasoning for that was, the advertisements/brochure and the capitalised “Freedom!” stuff set up a high expectation which, when put together with the “oh and we only ever got to go to some sucky location my mother chose” created bathos (expectation vs. reality)

And don’t worry about the pm! I’m not fussed about that sort of thing, cram for exam first, and everything else later! (though i must admit, for me it was often the other way round, particularly during my “Study Vacation” for the national exams heh.).

^^ yes, in the passage about the kind of intellectuals that the US institution liked, the passage was saying that US didn’t value the european notion of “learning for learning’s sake” and that american heros/remembered intellectuals have often been intellectuals with a practical purpose - ie. Edison.

hence - pragmatic (practical) intellectuals would be the answer. :)

Hmm well I do think it was expectation vs. reality. I really hated that section (caravan/rock). Was a very *** section.
Lol, thanks!
BTW, the mechanical question? Remember the context/choices anyone?
As for writing, and the gold medals that have got everyone fired up, I think quite positively it is “…,winning seven gold medals.” Reason: “decorated by” is an incorrect idiom. And it sounds quite messed up.

I believe it was a passage about how rocks weren’t as solid as they seemed, talking about the effects of corrosion, how dirt was made from clay which was weathered rock, and that the world around us reflected various stages of weathering.

mechanical referred to rocks being shifted by mechanical forces underground, causing fractures. I answered that this meant an explaination of physical forces.

Oh yes. I remember. Definitely should have been physical forces then. Do you happen to remember the other options? (Sorry lol, just seems you have a photographic memory!)

guys i got an experimental reading section…pls whoever didnt can u check which one u didnt get.

There was 1) a blog one and i think the caravan
2) a french guy talking about wrting abt himself
3) university commercilization
4) a black man talking about reading when he was young.

This is rough but it would be obvious to ayone who hasnt had one of these so can u pls anser this so we can solve the mystery of the CR experimental.

Oh! That’s good to know! I answered “were they to”. I can’t reason my writing answers as well as you guys can (because seriously, we don’t teach grammar in Australia).

No, sorry. My memory sort of works that I can really really clearly remember everything that I concentrate on, so in a test if I focus really hard on one thing, then I kind of block out the others.

PS. Everyone, I am an Aussie! (Australia) :)

Thanks to everyone! I’ve compiled a list. Hope it’s helpful
