<p>I play electric guitar in a band, love art (sketching and graphic novel/cartoon style art, indie comics are my thing) and want to be a writer, but I don't want to go somewhere where the kids are all pseduo artsy. I want to go somewhere where the students are genuinely artsy. I also like the "hipster" scene, good nightlife (clubs, bars) , good food, preferably large city, I also really like California, for some reason..I prefer urban or beach to rural, but a mix is okay. </p>
<p>I gotta support the Emerson choice. My sister went there for writing. They have a great writing and publishing major there, and the scene is just as you described. I definitely wouldn’t go to UMich or UVM though. U Mich seems very ‘jocky’ and Ann Arbor isn’t really what you are describing. Also, UVM appears to be really cool, but I know four genuinely awesome people who went there are all decided to transfer because the school was filled with rich kids from the east who sit around and play HALO 3 all day ha. Emerson is great for writing and Boston is an awesome city. Check it out. U Wash in Seattle would probably also be a good choice. Maybe UC Santa Cruz or something. Look into the UC schools and the liberal arts schools in the Claremont region. There are a ton of um.</p>
<p>Michigan has approximately 1000 students attending the School of Music located on North Campus. They put on performances ranging from operas to hip-hop to jazz to interpretive dance. There are musicians and artists all around campus. That number doesn’t include a countless number of student organized bands/groups/clubs performing regularly on campus and around the city of Ann Arbor.</p>
<p>UVM has always had an eclectic, if somewhat smaller, music scene, with numerous venues in the city of Burlington. The weather in Vermont is certainly eye opening in the winter, but that only seems to cause people to make a greater effort to get out and enjoy the city and surrounding area.</p>
<p>Investigate as many options as you can. You owe yourself that much. Take negative comments with a grain of salt; you may never know all the details of why someone dislikes a particular situation. For all you know, the reasons that some people leave may be exactly the reasons that attract you to a place. Good luck.</p>
<p>if you like hipster I would also second michigan. I live in the state and it is flooded with hipsters. It isn’t as prevalent at the university, but Ann Arbor is super artsy…</p>
<p>I understand why someone would say it is “sporty” or “jocky” because it has such a popular sports program, but a large number of students are not into the sport scene. In fact, I would say a majority of wolverine fans don’t attend the college. Around where I live, almost everyone is a michigan fan, but almost none of them actually went there.</p>
<p>Emerson is EXACTLY what you are talking about. It’s in Boston and it’s very artsy with music and film etc. Second recommendation: Wesleyan, very artsy as well. Those are the two schools which match almost exactly what you’re describing</p>
<p>I second UT-Austin. Austin has a huge music scene (self-proclaimed live music capital of the world) and the city is teeming with “hipsters.” Excellent bar scene. The student body is very diverse, but there’s lots of quirky “bookworm” types and artsy people.</p>
<p>Cornell has a great indie rock scene and a fantastic creative writing program. I saw Interpol, Animal Collective, and Broken Social Scene all before they made it big.</p>
<p>I am also looking to transfer to a new school. I do not want to go too far so im looking for schools preferably located within 3 hours of buffalo, ny. I want a school with good academic programs, but i also want a good indie music scene. Probably a smaller school where i can walk to a local bar or somewhere that bands will play at. I want a school where i can party and that has indie kids to hang out with. I also like prog rock and hipster. I’m hoping for a more artsy school even though i am majoring in a science field. At my current school, everyone goes to slutty bars and frat parties, so it isnt really my scene. I like house parties, but im not really into frats.</p>
<p>Wesleyan (CT); small college, blue collar town; MGMT, Boy Crisis, Amazing Baby, Das Racist, Francis and the Lights, Bear Hands, all came out of that scene.</p>
<p>I don’t think phoebe27325 has ever been to Michigan because I went there and would not describe myself as jocky. My sister went there and she is less jocky than I am. Going to football games doesn’t make someone jocky. I believe there are more music students than varsity athletes.</p>
<p>unfortunately, niether wesleyan or michigan have speech therapy, which is my major. But i dont know what other schools have what i am looking for.</p>
