Music Scene

Do any of these colleges have a good, active indie rock scene?

-University of Michigan Ann Arbor
-University of Illinois Urbana
-University of Indiana Bloomington

If not these, what are some other larger state school that would

Also, do these schools have many cafes, bars, restaurants, etc

University of Texas at Austin. My friend and I go to shows every week. From huge concerts to small up and coming artists in the basements of a restaurants. There are places to eat EVERYWHERE and we can never choose, most of the time. There is the infamous '6th street' where a lot of bars and such are located. But I don't know if you are interested in Texas. =]

Little too far away for me haha, im from new york...mostly looking at midwest, northeast, and a bit south.

I know IU has a decent scene. I've seen a bunch of stuff from indie to hip hop listed in Bloomington.

I think id really love Illinois anyways, but it would just be more amazing if they had an abundance of cafes, bookstores, libraries, restaurants, clubs, bars, live music every week.

There's all that stuff if you live near downtown Chicago. Maybe Springfield. Otherwise you won't like it unless you love boring, somber little towns. But you sound like you actually like to do fun stuff, so you might not like it. Try a visit or at least a virtual tour if they have it on their site. If it looks like this,
<a href="http://www.coalcampusa.com/westpa/blacklick/revloc/goldbric.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://www.coalcampusa.com/westpa/blacklick/revloc/goldbric.jpg</a></p>

Be wary cause you'll be hating yourself if you go there and it turns out to be that boring.

I'm interested in this too since I hope to transfer next year and actually wouldn't mind going down to Texas if the price is right.

Are you saying, Urbana Champagne is a dead town? Along with the university?

It doesn't compare to Bloomington or AA in any way.

there is no music scene in springfield, let me set that straight right off the bat. yes every single indie rock band will go through chicago at some point. urbana champaign has a pretty decent scene. we just had the yearly pygmalion festival which you can google. Some bands there were yo la tengo, times new viking, and black mountain. The Canopy Club has a decent well known act probably one every two weeks, but has something going on every night. Of Montreal came there last year. You can see bigger acts at foellinger and the assembly hall. Some recent ones were death cab, broken social scene, and ben folds. Not super into any of these bands but broken social scene was excellent and i am so ****ed i missed of montreal last year. Its a decent scene and chicago is just a couple hours away and the campus is 75% chicago kids so you shouldnt have any trouble getting there

jbuckel, I'm just saying you'll want to make sure on these schools that aren't near large cities because many of them have nothing going on. I've lived in Illinois all my life, I've never been to UC but just about every town I've been to has no music scene other than local. If I had to live in IL after college the only place I would consider would be in or nearby downtown chicago. You might want to look the school up in theu.com or campuscompare and see if any students bothered to review it.

There arnt many schools i like in or near Chicago, new york, or Philadelphia...Except Northwestern...But i probably couldn't get in.

The music scene here in Philly is absolutely amazing. We have every genre of music, and so many venues, I learn about new ones all the time.
