Alright so recently I have been accepted to George Washington University, Loyola Marymount University and Fordham. I want to major in Political Science and Pre-law, however I might decide to change my major to something like International Relations. I need some advice because my parents strongly suggest LMU and I am not incredibly inclined to go there. I sort of applied there as a safety school. The reasons my parents have been giving my are that LMU would be closer to home (I live basically 20 minutes away from the university.) and that LMU fosters the individual more whereas Fordham and George Washington are larger schools that are mainly taught by TAs as opposed to actually professors. I had actually heard a rumor like this about Fordham and I sort of just accepted it as truth because I had heard it from more than one person. However, now my parents said that GW is the same way and I am having hard time accepting this. If anyone would be able to shine some light on this issue that would be much appreciated. George Washington is basically my first choice as of now because of the location and the internship opportunities. Additionally it is much more highly ranked than LMU and GW also has a better polisci program. Please help me!!!!

For prelaw, international relations, and polysci, GW is one of the best undergraduate universities in the country. I would definitely choose GW.

I would suggest GW. Especially for a polisci or international affairs major. Great opportunities in the city. When I visited I was told that TAs aren’t allowed to teach any new material. However, I do think they rely heavily on TAs.

Can’t beat Washington DC for a polysci major. If cost is not an issue, GWU is your best bet

You need to get further than 20 minutes away from your parents. Where did your parents obtain the information about GW having most classes taught by TAs? And why are they only sharing that information now, when you are ready to make a decision?

You should spend some time on the GW forum and learn as much as you can about your first choice school.

Have you visited GW? I think you should contact the school and ask them about their use of TAs so you can debunk your parents assertion that it’s not a good school.

Then learn as much as you can about GW, and share the good attributes with your parents. Good luck!

As a parent, I really don’t buy the reasons they are giving you—LMU focuses more on the individual, and GWU has too many TA’s? Trying to talk you into your safety school opposed to your first choice school, that is far higher rated because of those reasons? No way. They may have valid reasons, but those can’t possibly be them.

It has got to be something larger, like they are getting cold feet about you moving too far away (as you suspect). Or is it more expensive to go to GWU? Those are certainly strong considerations, but you really need to get the straight story as opposed to the lame excuses. No offense to your parents, but kids can detect this in a minute!

Net price at each school? Debt (if any) needed at each school?

You can see if the on-line class schedules at each school list class capacities and actual enrollments. If instructors are named, you can than cross reference them with the faculty and graduate student rosters.
