I got into bioengineering at SD and undeclared at CAL. i was leaning towards SD because i got into bioengineering, but I've heard many bad things about sixth college (bad dorms, isolated, art oriented?), so i'm not sure what to do. Maybe I can switch out of sixth and get into warren/muir? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I would like to ask where you heard those bad things about Sixth.

There’s nothing extremely bad about Sixth - most people learn to love it. Even if you do switch out (very difficult to do), the process can only begin after one year so you’ll have already completed the writing program and lived in the dorms. It’s essentially pointless. You should be choosing between UCSD and Cal. What environment do you like more? Do you like San Francisco or San Diego? have you visited both campuses, what social atmosphere do you prefer??

PS engineering is amazing at UCSD if you do choose to come here!
PPS Sixth is having a Chocolate Festival in a few weeks, what more could you ask for??

Has anyone told you about Cal dorms? Ha!

In other news, I agree. Go with the schools over all. Both programs are excellent.

I chose UCSD over Cal and have no regrets!

the thing is, i got into engineering at UCSD, and sixth requires you to do some more cultural social ges, which means i’ll be behind in engineering prereqs. does this mean i’ll have to ultimately take more classes than other colleges at UCSD?

oh btw how are the Cal dorms? i haven’t heard about them :p

All of the colleges at UCSD require you to take some sort of “social cultural” GEs… that is the purpose of GEs, to make students more well-rounded. For ERC I had to take fine arts, too. People in Warren have to take programs of concentration. I promise Sixth is no worse than any other college. You’ll still be able to graduate on time.

Sixth does not have “bad dorms.” we are lacking in that we don’t have a “real kitchen” or ocean views like some of the other colleges’ dorms. however, there is nothing that stands out and makes us particularly bad! I don’t know where that comes from. we might be a little far from some classes but you’ll learn to adjust. we are no more isolated than some in Warren. as a positive, we’re quite close to Price Center and the Loft where many concerts are. we’re also very close to the city bus stop if you don’t have a car and need to get off campus for anything. our writing sequence is three quarters long as opposed to five or six quarters for Revelle and ERC, I believe. & I know there are more than a few bio majors and engineers who are doing all right at Sixth.

it’s best to look at the colleges overall, like other posters have said. both are great great schools. so it’s up to you, don’t let the fact that you are in Sixth deter you.

Okay, let’s be honest here. Sixth dorms are bad compared to other colleges’.

There might be different perspectives as to whether or not it really is bad, but as you can see, a decent amount of people get used to living in sixth and develop a sense of loyalty to it.

Anyway, I’m sorry to hear that you got into sixth, but if you do decide to come, I hope you can make the best of it!

well, all right, maybe it was wrong of me to say something without having visited all of the other dorms first ?

does anyone even do that. haha.

Sixth’s dorms aren’t that bad. It’s kind of nice how you live in a little suite with a couch and everything so you get to know your suitemates a lot more. But yes. There is definitely a lack of awesome ocean views. Mighty Morphing Power Muirons ftw.

The only thing I don’t like about Sixth is Foodworx, but my Sixth friends seem to not mind that much.

OP, I knew someone who was just like you a couple of years ago, choosing between bioengineering at UCSD and undeclared at Cal.

She chose UCSD and is doing really, really well there with amazing research opportunities and no regrets.

In regards to your concern about Sixth College, I have a few friends there who absolutely love it. It may look like Camp Snoopy, but the atmosphere and the vibe is really friendly and exciting from my experience (I don’t go to UCSD). Dorm-wise, it is MUCH better than the ones at Cal. More space, a home-ier niche, single-gender suites, etc.

Visit both schools. You can’t make an informed decision without experiencing it yourself.
