Decipher financial aid letter??

I'm a college freshman at a public university, with a merit-based scholarship and a GPA of around a 2.5 after my first semester. The terms of my scholarship require me to have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, but does that mean 3.0 each semester or that by the end of the year my GPA is 3.0 cumulative??

I found my original scholarship letter and this is what it says: "Your award will be automatically renewed for three additional years of study as long as you are continuously enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more credits earned during each of the regular Fall and Spring semesters), maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA in your classes, and abide by the University's Student Code of Conduct."

What I'm really trying to figure out is, if I get a much better GPA next semester and it averages out to at least a 3.00 by the end of this upcoming spring semester, do you think my scholarship will be renewed for next year? Yes, I'm sure I can contact the Financial Office if need be but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas first, as many offices are closed during this part of winter break. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions!

We would only be guessing. There may be a possibility you will be put on probation of sorts for next semester and be able to recover but that means getting a 3.5 next semester given an equal number of credits the 2 semesters. Yes, contact whoever administers the scholarships as soon as possible and ask.

It could go either way - they may review after each semester, or they may review at the end of the academic year. The few schools with which I have had experience have reviewed at the end of the academic year … but you should definitely call and make sure of your school’s policies.

Ask at your school.
