Hi! I'm going to be a junior in September and I had initially planned, as did practically everyone at my school, to take the SAT sometime after receiving PSAT scores. However, by that time, I'm afraid I may lose my edge on SAT-related material and be overly distracted from review due to my participation in a winter sport. Would it be a bad decision if I were to take the October exam, since I do the bulk of PSAT studying during the summer?

I don’t think that’s a bad decision, as long as you feel fully prepared. If your score does not meet your expectations, you can try again in the spring.

Whenever you are ready. :D

I advise you to prepare yourself adequately prior to registering for the SAT test because, as a junior, you possess the advantage of ample time. October of junior year even seems early for a student to take the SAT; as a rising junior myself, I plan upon taking the exam in March.
