Is it a good idea to take the SAT in October as a Junior?

I realize there's another thread regarding when to take the SATs, and overall the advice seems to be conflicting. I was just wondering if there were obvious cons to taking the SAT early in one's junior year (and hopefully being done with it, or having time to improve...). Thanks!!

i don't know what others or "experts" would say you should do, but during my junior year i took the ACT in December, SAT I in January, SAT II in May, and SAT I in June. i know many people who took SAT I in October and others who did not take their first SAT I until may or june.

just some more info: january was good because then i had time before june and now i have time before october if i need to take it again. also SAT II in may was good because it was right in the middle of AP testing so i was studying for those subjects anyway. i don't think there are any real cons to october though, but i would wait until after you get back PSAT scores.

Thanks for your help!

I took the PSAT this year as a sophomore (and got a 223). I've also taken 3 SATII's in the past schoolyear, and if those scores come back okay, then I'll be all set with SATII's. So, I was planning to take the SAT in October after prepping for it in the summer. However, I have heard that usually scores on the SAT go up just from taking it later because you have more general knowledge, etc. Therefore would it be a bad idea to take the SAT earlier...?

snowia,
It's just my opinion, but I don't think there's anything wrong (actually I think it's a good idea) to take the SAT early in Jr. year. Espically for someone like you who got a very high PSAT score as a sophomore and is planning on studying during the summer. My D's Jr. PSAT was just a little higher than your sophomore year score. She studied about a month before the jr. PSAT and again over Christmas break, and took the SAT in Jan, with a planned retake in June if necessary. She got 2300+ her first try. I can't tell you how good she felt as many of her friends were taking their's sandwiched between AP tests. Everyone is different, but it makes sense to me that you take it early--if you do well, you're done; if you need improvement, you have plenty of time to study and retake it. Good luck, I think you're gonna do great whenever you take it!

i don't see why not to take it October.

I plan on taking it in the Fall of my junior year for the first time. I got a 220 on my sophmore PSAT, hoping to improve over that score. Anyways, i just want to establish and early baseline and see where I'm at early, because I know second semester is going to be insane.

^ My thoughts exactly, OptimusPrime. Good luck studying!

Thanks for your help, everyone! I think I'm going to take it in October, and then see how things go from there.

People tell me to take it in october because if you do bad you still have time to improve...but if u take it later in the year you won't have as many chances to retake it and do better.
