NU really screwed over Wisconsin applicants.

I signed up for an interview, but was immediately emailed that the system was down and they would contact me as soon as possible for scheduling.

Never happened.

Thanks anyway there, NU. Just don't penalize me when it's your fault.

I know of at least 8 WI applicants that got alumni interviews after signing up, so I'm not sure whether or not it will hurt you since they got them w/o problems...

arbiter213: I don't know about that. I am not sure how NU operates but in case of MIT or many other schools, applicants with alumni interview showed much higher acceptance rates. They say that having no interview would not hurt an applicant but it is true that they take alumni interview report into account.

i never got the chance to do an interview.
i really dont think it would be fair to have it negatively influence your decision. ive read that it doesn't.

i guess im going to be hurridly checking my email every few hours for the next week.

northwestern.
do you know if they are decent with financial aid?

I dont think it will have a negative influence, it will hopefully just help if you had a interview to show them that you were more interested. Having a interview shows them that you were very eager to come to Northwestern.

Northwestern makes it very clear that alumni interviews have no impact on admissions so I really would not worry especially because the availability for the interviews was so sporadic (they didn't even have them in my area). The interviews are simply so that you can get to know the school better. Colleges that put weight on interviews make that very clear.

rpo272, I see what you mean and I know NU says that the interviews don't matter but i seriously doubt that they would conduct these interviews for no reason. I theorize that the interviews honestly allow them to see who has tons of interest seriously. I don't think that they have zero impact, seriously.

I see what everyone is saying, but I did actually sign up for an interview- I just never got one, so I don't think it would be to bad. I was just worried the school didnt have an interest in me. Well let bygones be bygones I suppose

I don't think interviews have any impact. I live about 30 minutes away from Northwestern in the summer, and we called about an interview, and they said it was purely informational and unnecessary, so I didn't have one (I visited the previous summer). Also, they don't send anyone to interview at my HS (most colleges do)...so I'm pretty sure they have no impact whatsoever. Don't worry.

wow, that's actually a bit suprising.. why have an interview if it's going to be a waste?? idk, i think that the admissions will read over the interview, but unless it's absolutely GLOWING... i don't think it will impact the decisions too much

^From what I understood, the interview wasn't a waste - it was an opportunity for the student to ask questions - an "informational interview." I have no idea whether that would play a part in the admissions process. I'd think they couldn't do much with it beyond gauging interest, since NU claims it doesn't interview.
I didn't have one because I was busy and burnt out on college stuff at the time. I won't know whether that hurt me, but it doesn't really matter at this point.

The interview gives applicants an opportunity to ask questions and get candid responses from former students, not sugar-coated, prepared statements from the university, which the adcoms (and even tour guides to some extent) are required to give. They are only a waste if you have no questions whatsoever or don't use the opportunity to find out more about where you might spend the next 4 years.

NU was my first and only college interview - my mouth turned dry before the first minute of the interview was up. I liked the information I got out of the interview - told me about the transitioning from her high school to NU to her current job, networking, etc.

No, because I wear deodorant. ;) But in a figurative sense- yes, definitely.
^^^ I'm actually more afraid of my financial aid here than anything else. I hear they're freakishly stingy. You know what sucks? Aid is really awesome at the very tippy top schools, but those are so hard to get into. Once you get into schools outside the top five or so, you might get in, but you''ll probably put your parents out of house and home to get there (at least, us middle/lower class kids will.) My efc was over $30,000! Um, hello? Oprah's not paying my college tuition.
