Decisions 2009-2010

Unfortunately rejected from Tisch - Teck Track, which is a real bummer. But accepted to Northwestern, UMich, and Hofstra! Not sure on which to choose…

I’m planning to major in technical theatre (or just theatre), and possibly minor in Biology. I’m also looking for a college that’s large enough to get lost, but will be possible to make a close knit of friends as well as lots of acquaintances. Also, I think connections with alumni, specifically those working in theatre, are pretty important, since it’s theatre after all.

I did as much research as I could, but as an international, there’s the limit of not being able to visit the campus. Does anyone have any advice to which college would be the best fit?

Northwestern would seem pretty hard to turn down, I would think!

What if you still haven’t heard from NCSA. Do you call or just wait?

faco3, i talked to Bill Poole today via email and he told me that he is sending out the letters for the ppl who auditioned in late feb. this week. I auditioned on the 28th so Im really excited/scared. Are u trying for the acting program?

Yes, BFA in acting. Others at her school have heard but she has not. The theater admissions person said they were sent out days ago so I’m not sure what that means. I know they will not give you information over the phone. D. auditioned in early February at Unified in Chicago. Do you know if they wait list?

faco3:

Someone on the “North Carolina School of the Arts” thread said he got an email today telling him that he was on a small wait list. So, I guess they do wait list, but your D probably should have been notified via email I would think. I feel like if they are just this week getting the letters out for late feb. auditions, maybe not all the letters have come to early feb. ppl?? I don’t know. You might want to email them. They are really good about getting back with people. Do u live far from UNCSA? That might have something to do with it.

Don’t give up hope. I am still waiting as well.

be_somebody – I’m with NMR. I don’t see how you could turn down Northwestern. It has arguably the best BA in Theater program in the country, outstanding school academically, andChicago is about equal to NY as a theater town now. Go visit in April and get a feel for the place.

Congratulations on getting in to three great universities – don’t lose any sleep over NYU. You have a great future ahead!

“I don’t see how you could turn down Northwestern. It has arguably the best BA in Theater program in the country” My son is making his decision on which school for Technical theater. We have heard the CMU is the “best” school. It is all so confusing for someone that is trying to learn. We have looked at class catalogs and he has visited the schools. Is it because one is BA and one is BFA? How is it decided which is the “best”.

MHETTmom - The “best” school is the one that works best for your child. Reputation means nothing if your son is unhappy. Look at the schools, compare the programs on paper and in person, speak to students and incoming students. Then let him (with your input) decide which he thinks will work best for him. Almost any school will give him the education he needs to continue in his chosen field, make sure the atmosphere is the right one.

Thanks amtc. It is just so confusing and both school are across the country from home. Wish he could spend more time at them. He did visit both of them. This whole process he had his number one school, but theater people have been telling him the other school is so good and it does have a wonderful reputation. His interview went really well and he was so thrilled when he came out of it. We really just want to be sure he is choosing what will be the best fit him. I need to quit worrying, but then I am the mom so do we ever quit?

Chrissyblu…congratulations on CCM-it is a great school and your daughter should do well there. My take on Cinncy…we live not far from Sandusky (which by the way is a wonderful place in the winter when the tourists all go home! Just kidding…but it is a great place)but have traveled down to Cincy a lot for business. The area around the University can be rough-it is a very urban University. From what I hear from friends who have kids there, the security is very good-but you have to remember that it is urban in an older rust belt city. However-Cincy has a lot of wonderful things to offer. The is a vibrant arts community, areas around the city are very nice…and there is just a lot going on. It depends on your prospective. It WILL be VERY different from California…but certainly not as urban as NYU or Rutgers! I suggest visiting and get a feel for the campus. Talk to other conservatory students. from what I hear-the CCN students are way too busy to get into too much trouble!

aughhhh…son is Technical Direction bound at EITHER CCM or Rutgers (accepted at UConn but decided against it)…have compared programs, visited both schools but could use some wisdom of the crowds here to help out!

Thoughts? Comparative analysis?

Not sure if I am puttting this in the right place, but my D has been accepted into the BFA acting programs at Emerson and BU. Any thoughts on how the schools compare --training/reputation/alumni network? I have recently read some less than favorable reviews of Emerson, but the BU program doesn’t get much play, although they were members of the Consortium of Conservatory Theater Programs along with CMU, NCSA, and Purchase --none of which accepted her :frowning: Would appreciate some input!

North Carolina School of the Arts
CalArts
Marymount Manhattan
SUNY Purchase (wait-listed)
University of Michigan (wait listed)
…this might be difficult…

Directormom, BU has a superb program. My son is trying to decide between it and NYU/Tisch now and is leaning toward BU.

If you search under “Boston” on both the Drama and MT forums (the latter has posts about straight acting) you should find a some posts about BU. I’ve found that “BU” doesn’t work in searches so I’ve always searched for it under “Boston.”

Also if you click on my screen name and look for other posts from me, I have said quite a bit about BU recently on various threads.

Just noticed that Fremix makes some nice comments about BU in post #16 of
“i read the billion entries on those twelve threads.”

…CalArts…UNCSA…Marymount Manhattan…Purchase (wait list)…University of Michigan (wait list)…hmmm…

NMR and StageMom, thank you for the advice and encouragement! After I was rejected from NYU, my parents finally confided in me that it would have caused a severe strain financially on the family if I had gone to NYU. I guess all things do work out in the end.

I’m actually leaning towards UMich… A lot of people have told me that academically NU and UMich are comparable, so it comes down to the other factors, and personally UMich wins in most parts. Ahh, decisions, decisions.

be_somebody: why UMich instead of NW?

To be_somebody - Your story reminds me of years ago when I didn’t get accepted at Northwestern for undergrad, my parents said the same thing though they had not shared their concern about finances when I applied. I was soooo disappointed but they were of course very relieved! Instead I went to a state school on a free ride and years later got a master’s at Northwestern (and that was paid for by my employer at the time). So you just never know how things will turn out, but they usually turn out OK!
