decisions coming out today

Good thing there’s a place for all of us parents (and a few determined students, of course) to come and worry about this in good company! I agree that discerning really clear trends is impossible, though it will be a happy day when anything happens to my son’s status that suggests the committee is actually looking at the application!

are’nt you a little late in asking that question? but seriously, USC is a good school for most disciplines – Marshall, Annenberg are excellent schools.

hahaha i have been losing sleep over this.
i just need to chill, and wait.
hopefully, the waiting pays off the in end.

I always get disappointed when I look in my mail. =/ Mostly because there’s not even a letter for me. I really like getting mail. It’s exciting. One day, someone will send me a letter. One day…

well it’s not really a school that i looked a lot into…Cal’s my top choice. i mean, should i be proud of getting into USC? lol

I’m guessing you’re asking about prestige. Yes, USC is prestigious.

should i still be anxious about cal?

Um…I don’t know about that school.

they are 2 very different schools – depends on what you are looking for – for one thing you should proud that you got in.

Cal is a great school but is huge. I am local to the bay area & remember reading an article in a local paper last year which said that there was a waiting list to get on a waiting list for a class - you are not going to have that kind of an issue at USC.

i mean based on acceptance statistics, etc…academics…because i got into USC, should i be a little more confident about Cal?

thanks for the help btw CUPKSDAD :)

No, because each university has different ways of selecting students. Just because you get into, say Columbia, that doesn’t boost your chances of getting into, say Yale.

cal like other UCs is very numbers based – as long you have the required (which tends to be very high) GPA & SAT you should get in – not a holistic process like the private schools. That being said, the number of apps that UCs get are much higher than private schools. Hope this helps.

Congratulations on getting in

i heard that this year, both cal and ucla adopted “holistic approaches” to admissions.
not that its going to majorly affect anything. they’re still both very competitive in admissions. lol
anyways, back to USC.
just want to get in already. lol but im sure everyone’s feeling the same way.

What are you talking about? They’ve (LA and Cal) always had a hollistic approach unlike the other UCs that are more numbers driven (they actually use formulas).

Hi everyone!

I was in the recent wave of acceptances (received mine last Saturday), and I just wanted to update you all by saying that my status has finally changed to “The committee has acted on…” on 3/4/08 after being on “We are reviewing…” for approximately one month.

Good luck to you all! :)

don’t all of them have formulas? like u have to a certain uc calculation to even be eligible to apply? and the out of state calculation has to be higher than the in state calc?

i applied to usc, ucla, and cal. i have a friend that applied to cal and already got rejected. supposedly they already denied like 70% of applicants, but i haven’t heard anything yet. so i don;t even know what to think about my status there. we’re both out of state, but i live with my aunt and uncle and both of my parents live in state, so idk, maybe my standards are lower than his

cal already rejected 70 percent? what??

anywyas i’m glad USC was my first acceptance..yayyy.

This isn’t really the place to discuss UC admissions given that this is USC but forgive me:

I don’t know where you got those figures about them already deciding 70% (even rejecting that many) but it’s obvious that they’re already through reading a lot. Plus, I’m sure they’ve already decided upon some (if not most) applicants since last month or even sooner. They don’t do rolling admissions (although I think Riverside does starting in February) so they release it all at one time.

All the UCs except Cal and LA use something called comprehensive review. In fact, you can Google “UC [Campus] comprehensive review” and find these “formulas.” LA and Cal decide on their applicants in a hollistic manner (whatever that means) much like private schools do theirs (so take that for what you mean but there’s your definition of hollistic admissions? non-formulaic?)

To be elligible you have to maintain a 3.0 GPA and fulfill A-G requirements but those are requirements to be considered and not to be accepted (although you have to meet the requirements to be considered to be accepted of course).

A fascinating article on the ugly history of “holistic admissions”
