Decisionssss

Should I go to UCSD Muir college under the major of bioengineering:premed or go to UCB as a spring admit for cell and development biology? I know going to a college mainly for a major isn’t really a good thing to do because of how often people change their majors, but I can’t help but be tempted towards UCSD for my major. Berkeley was my first choice and I didn’t really expect to get in but it so happens I did. Problem is this spring admission thing has me thinking, is it worth it? And does anyone know how they choose between spring adn fall admits because from my observations it seems really random so far. Any suggestions would help. Especially when you been to both campuses. I’m going to go down myself to san diego during spring break and going to cal day for berk just go check it out. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Well, the Spring admit thing sort of destroys the whole freshman bonding experience. Can't help but think Spring Admits will always feel like the odd man out, last to the party.

But maybe the Betkeley program is worth it.

that's tough
if both were fall admits, id say ucb for sure

but given the situation and circumstances, im going to vouch for ucsd

I am in the same situation you are in Larkin....

UCSD Muir College for Bionengineering premed or Berkeley for Spring admit to Molecular and Cell Biology...

The Fall program for Freshman at Cal helps with the whole freshman bonding thing so I am not too concerned about the Spring admit issue...

I would like to know what UCSD and Berkeley's Med school acceptance rates are - this might nelp me make up my mind. I went to a Coalition for Diversity meeting for Berkeley in February and they told me that they have an 80% medical school acceptance rate! That is impressive.

I am also deciding on UC Davis as a Biomedical Engineer - Davis had a college town feel and I really liked it.

I really like UCSD but Davis and Berkeley had more major choices for me (in case I switch)

I am more concerned about the all around college experience.

So UCSD, or UC Davis, or Berkeley...tough choice...

lol i got into davis as biomed engin too but davis is like 15mins away from me so =/. I also got into irvine for biomed and I heard it's really nice there. So ucsd, ucb, uci, and ucd. AH!

hey Larkin, I got into UCI for Bio-Premed also, but I am an hour away so I was not planning on going there!

I did like the town of Davis and the campus...they also had a few more majors that I am interested in over UCSD.

This is such a tough decision...I know alot of people will think I am crazy if I turn down Berkeley...

I definitely like the UCSD surrounding area better than Berkeley

but UCSD has no football team and lacks some of the majors I am looking into...

so what are you going to use as your deciding factors? I have to get loans so cost for any of them is not an issue...

for me it's going to be the surroundings and just the overall feel i'll get when i visit the campuses.

I really liked the feel and surroundings of UCSD. The buildings have a more modern feel and I do love the beach and I've lived in the suburbs all my life so it really felt like a home away from home to me.

The Berkeley campus has a nice traditional college feeling to it with its lawns and pretty classical buildings but I couldn't stop thinking about actual Berkeley town which was horrible (since I live in my Orange County bubble). And it's a great school too. But I didn't like how it was like one a hill and I felt slanted.

But that's just all my opinion from when I visited.

thanks helloelscorcho :)

UCSD does have the no2 bioengineering progrm in the nation

Hey larkin

reallllly tough decision because ur sacrificing that one term
if u are a really social guy, im sure you could overcome that 1 term lag, especially if you have friends from your school thats going to berkeley as well
if education is the number one factor, as i believe it should be, then berkeley for sure

my friend is in the exact same situation as you are
i hope u make the right decisions larkin because where ever you end up, im sure you'll do fine

I personally can't handle the spring admit thing. I feel like Berkeley rejected me, like I'm a second-class student who backed in on sheer luck. Though the FPF would probably be a positive thing for me, and breaking out of my LA-metropolitan strip mentality would definitely be good...I wouldn't be able to make it past my freshman year. My motivation would be destroyed.

That's my take on it, anyway. "Follow your own gut" is my best piece of advice.

thanks larkmasta! i wish i was as wise as you :)

if you do choose berkeley, try the gelato place on shattuck. that's the best advice i can give

is it mostly a crip neighboorhoood? i need to knwo what colors to wear!

I think you should be neutral. In case there is a change in power, you'll won't be affiliated. Purple will work, i suppose. But don't take my word, I'm from the suburbs and go to berkeley for the gelato.

ill bring blue and red shirts just in case.

haha, vii, i LOVE that gelato place!!! the nutella is amazing.

Hey Larkin, (awesome name, btw)

This is interesting, my friend has the exact same dilemma, though I'm not exactly sure what his majors are for either schools. What factors are helping you make your decision? If you're a social person and you'd like party a lot, go to UCSD. If you want to hit the books and get acquainted with flaming liberals, go to UCB. Also, are you much of a family guy? Maybe you can go to a JC the first semesters so you can get used to not having to rely on your family and then gradually "leave the nest."

And no, Berkeley is not a "crip neighborhood." As long as you stay with the right group of people you'll be fine. But Berkeley might get the best of you, especially if you've lived in the suburbs your whole life.

O Thanks Dabombshop. You're So Helpful!
