Declaring a major

I'm a freshman, so I haven't taken very many classes, but I'm feeling a strong interest in one subject over the others. I never really felt excited about any classes in high school, so I think this might be the major for me.

Is it too early to declare my major next semester (second semester of freshman year)? I know most students declare spring of sophomore year, but I hear it's pretty easy to change majors if I change my mind. Obviously, I haven't taken any upper level classes yet, and I feel like I can't decide for sure until later, but I feel pretty hopeful that it'll work out.

My four-year advisor told me that he doesn't know much about the major I'm considering, so I'm wondering if it would make sense to declare sooner rather than later. I think that at the very least, I would minor in this subject. Also, I'm planning on pre-law, which leaves my major wide open, and at the same time, I don't want to limit my options by failing to consider other possibilities.

There’s no harm in waiting to declare, right? If so, I don’t see why you shouldn’t just wait and make sure you continue to be interested in the subject. I’m not too familiar with the process because I wasn’t in ArtSci, plus I declared my major immediately and never changed it.
