You only need to fill out one FA form for all the schools, right?

How did your interview go? How was your interviewer? Also, did you meet coaches personally during your tour? If so, how? (I’d like to meet the tennis, swimming, dance and soccer coach)

Is Deerfield known for any particular academic subject, such as science? Or is it more of a well-rounded school? What about their arts program?

my interview went super, my interviewer was very nice and seemed very interested in what I was saying (which I think is a good thing haha!) I was able to meet the music director during my tour, but I did not know this (it just happened by chance I was able to meet the music director) but you can ask ahead of time to meet with a coach or two you want to meet with. It might be a bit much to ask to see 4, you get to meet all of them on re visit day before you decide, so meeting with the coaches here is really mainly to try to get them to want you in their program. so maybe ask to meet the coach of the sport you really excel at? but like I said, you can meet ALL the coaches and extracurricular people on revisit day, and even go see some practices if you want to!

Umm, yeah, I’d say Deerfield has an excellent science program, but really, I think every subject is well taught, and its important to Deerfield to have the best teachers in all areas.

Their arts program for visual arts and dance seems really good. I know a ballerina from Deerfield got into Julliard this year ( one out of 12 female dancers from all over the country.) but I don’t know much simply because I’m not reallly involved in those areas. Their theater program is good, I’ve seen some clips and they always have a lot of different ways you can get involved. I guess that’s about all I know. After I am there, (ahh I can’t believe I’m GOING!) I’ll let you know more haha!

Although it seems like you two are the only ones here, I’m reading all your posts! (Okay that sounded a bit creepy.) What I mean is: keep going! This really helps.

Livenlaugh, please go on and on about what you liked. :)

Since in the article about over-enrollment it says that there will be more students than before, but the budget for financial aid will remain the same, does that mean each student is going to get less financial aid?

I’m just going to repost the questions you guys asked so it is easier for me. (and no worries lemons.can.fly, not creepy at all haha =D)

What was your SSAT score? 96% overall

Don’t you fill out the referral form after you submit an inquiry if you want to meet coaches or something for arts during your interview? Yes, I think so.

Also, I heard that Deerfield is NOT need-blind?
“Q: I am applying for financial aid. Will Deerfield handle my application any differently?
A: It is important to note that all applicants are evaluated with no distinction made between applicants who are applying for financial aid and applicants who are not applying for financial aid. For 44% percent of our families, applying for financial aid is just another step in the process of applying to independent schools.” - direct quote from deerfields website, aka. they are needs blind

Can you explain to me the dress code? Oh. Well. For girls it is just, a. no denim and b. you have to have two visible layers, like, a tank top and a little cardigan sweater. or a cami and an american eagle thin pullover sweater. a lot of girls wear cute skirts or dresses (dresses just have be worn with like…once again a cute cardigan sweater.) Dress code is actually one of the things that I really liked about Deerfield. If everyone looks nice it makes people feel like they should behave better haha. and I love to dress up =D. Every friday in the winter is dress down day though, and you can wear whatever you want.

As to your questions lemons.can.fly, about financial aid? If I were you guys, I would just do my very very best applying and see what financial aid comes. There is not much point to worrying about it. I know that sounds lame, but just focus on making your best application, and make sure you get your financial aid forms in on time.

I’ll add a few more things I liked about Deerfield, even though this is already a really long post.
Sit down meals! They are really great! It is 4 times a week for lunch and 3 times a week for dinner, and you get to sit down (with an assigned table), meet people you may not have met if you didn’t have sit down meals with them, and eat a really good meal. I hate just cafeteria style all the time, which is what MOST boarding schools have. Sit down meals I think were a huge positive point for Deerfield for me.
Dorms are really nice! It’s as simple as that! And the fact that 80% are singles seemed nice to me, not that I wouldn’t like having a room mate, but it’s just easier to have your own workspace and bedroom and not have to worry about anyone else’s schedule and when they go to sleep etc.

oh. Sorry, I forgot to put the dress code for guys. I think it is just tie and jacket. but I read somewhere pullover sweaters are okay too. [Deerfield Academy :: an independent, coeducational boarding high school](http://www.deerfield.edu) has TONS of great information. I swear I read that whole website 100 times over when I was applying haha.

Thanks for clearing up the dress code I thought it was no cardigans, blazers and sweaters only. But then I realizes cardigans and sweaters can be the same thing, haha

About how big are the dorms? By the way I saw the prospective video and everything is so incredible!!

Thanks for helping us all out here, I (we) really appreciate it!

I think that the size of the dorms really vary by dorm. The one I saw when I toured (in the newer dorms) was pretty big. It was really nice and all the dorm common rooms and everything look like fun. I’ll learn more once I’m there haha!

You would receive the forms around October if you’d filled out the inquiry form, or you could print the forms and fill it out. You cannot fill the forms out online, although some schools like St. Paul’s does.

My computer won’t open PDF’s for me, apprently :-/ I think Deerfield is the only school–at least on my list–that isn’t giving the option of filling out applications online.

Got you now. I thought you were talking about sending the application online after filling it out. It’s pretty odd, because I was able to open it :$

A trick my daughter learned from her high school counselor when filling out scholarship applications / college applications: you can buy 8x11 transparent labels (Staples has them). Type what you need on the computer and print out on the transparent label, cut out, and paste on the application as needed.

that is a great idea. just be careful though, because for deerfield, they really want your essays handwritten. my interviewer talked about how it was like…important so they knew the kids wrote it, and not just their parents or teachers. i would just call to check and make sure its okay to use typed labels.

What I did for mine was I’d handwritten it, albeit my illegible handwriting, and typed it out again. Then I just stapled them together with the typed one on the top.

livenlaugh can you give me some tips about how you wrote your essay application. What made your essay stand?
I’m applying to DA too and the application came yesterday.
