i meant seej's friend sorry

Well here is the smoking gun...what our friend neglected to figure out was that last monday the class schedule was changed for revisit day...there was only one class before lunch because revisit kids didn't start their schedules until late in the morning...can we please move on???

Moving on
My estimation of Deerfield has increased because of this thread. By reading this thread, I found out that there was some intimidation at a private school (not surprising), and that the school as a whole is responding intelligently to the matter (surprising). The students from Deerfield represented themselves very well and seem to be thoughtful and articulate young people. On the whole, the thread was ultimately worthwhile.

I too have found this thread useful for the discussion of minorities being targeted at a boarding school. I was very appreciative to have heard from the Deerfield students themselves, although I wish we had gotten more information from the school sooner. I believe that this issue has provided a good example of where an institution is addressing an issue in a thoughtful and logical, albeit more private method, but has not considered the "information society" in which we live. I am pleased to see that Deerfield was taking the incident very seriously, as they should have. While I understand the school's desire to protect the privacy of targeted students (a VERY important concern), I wish they could have found a way to have some official statement for the public (applicants, future applicants, concerned citizens in general). Other schools have addressed disturbing and even tragic events on their web sites, yet been able to maintain student privicacy.

Again, THANK YOU to the students at Deerfield for speaking up and providing information.

Also, my apologies to those I may have offended for engaging in a personal back-and-forth with one poster. That was never my intent. I was merely trying to be sure that accurate information from one LGBT perspective was being provided, since there do not seem to be many (any?) other adult LGBT posters on this board.

Balto,
You need glasses. I said I went with a senior. They did not participate in the revisit and had normal classes.
Thank you Brooklyn for changing to "minorities being targeted".
Adios.

I feel very middle school in the continuation of this topic, but it disconcerts me somewhat that there is a person so bent on proving a fallacy. I'm not sure what your motive was, bf, but i hope it was in no way sinister. so this is, hopefully, the last I'll say on this matter, because biggestfoot keeps trying to keep his lie alive.
EVERYONE is on the second visit day schedule. it's not like, some kids go to certain classes because they have a prospective. it's the school schedule for the day. just for clarification, bf. and seniors never tour freshmen. even when requested. seniors don't tour people period, unless theyre pgs.
also, you would not have ever toured JL2 South as it is a girls' hall. and there would be no circumstance in which the school would allow a boy to tour a girls' hall.
it is somewhat disturbing how much you can discover by navigating our website, however it remains that all of your information could easily have been gathered either online or in a tour of the school (before applying). i am disappointed and, as I have said, a bit troubled.

This page is a hot topic at school. I wanted to straighten a few things out.

The Seven is NOT an underground society. We are mostly legacy students (I am 5th generation) who want to return to The Boyden School of all male. We realize the school started out as a day coed school, but the boarding concept was all male. We meet with administration and in fact have gotten single sex tables. We are proud of the traditions of Deerfield and want to be the "Deerfield Boys" again.

We DO NOT want just "all white boys". We don't care if they are white, black, indian, gay, straight or whatever as long as they are male. We are proud that we were one of the first schools with minority faculty and students. We also do not believe in the "need free admission" process. While exceptional students should receive FA, the main thought should be equality for everybody.

We have not and never will threaten anybody. We make our points known openly and try to have our alumni vote (esp with their pocket books). We believe that blind letters and intimidation is wrong.

As an aside, senior sometimes take prospects around under special situations. I took the son of my father's roommate around and took him to my classes. And we do have 20th century history and essentially third world history.

This will be my one and only post, but I wanted to set the record straight.

seej, I'm wondering if you could give me your opinion on something. Would a Deerfield student use "DF," such as DFSeven, to mean Deerfield, or would a student use DA? Perhaps I'm being too suspicious, since we already had one mean troll on this thread (and you know who you are, BF)....

I am a Deerfield student.
To answer your question, PlantFan, most "DA" kids use DA instead of DF, but I have no reason to believe DFSeven is, in fact, in any way lying. I will not get into a discussion of the 7's, however, because this is not the forum for such a thing, and frankly, they deserve no attention. We are all entitled to our opinions, but DFSeven, I suggest you check your facts about the DA curriculum. We have no 20th century history class. There are classes that cover 20th century, but no class directly focusing on such. And in terms of "essentially third world history" that is also false. There are specific classes that, at times, focus on third world history, but no third world history class. I feel no need to further defend my school against the frankly erroneous claims that bf stepped his "biggestfoot" on our campus this spring as a newly admitted student...Perhaps BF and DFSeven could create a separate discussion forum for this topic or others that seem more interesting to them.

For everyone else, I think we would all appreciate it if the topic was maintained around GLBTQ issues in prep schools, or more specifically the letter incident here at DA.

I promised myself I would not be drawn in, but this will be the last.

Greendoor,
You must be a new DA student. I suggest you check with the 400 level history curriculum:
HIS412: Modern Times: Twentieth Century World History
HIS440: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Times (cultures in turmoil) which is essentially third world history.

As to the relevance of my post,
Most of the students at DA are very open to all types of beliefs. There are groups that openly wish their viewpoint to be known. The Gay straight alliance and the Black Student Organization are not just made up of gay or blacks respectively, but mixed groups hoping to learn from others. But for the Seven to be described as a racial or threatening group, as was done, is also wrong. We believe that guys act and learn better without girls present. We probably will not win in going back to the "Deerfield boys", but we may win with single sex tables and classes.
Thank you.
(and plantfan, I refer to Deerfield Academy as DA, but DF in my moniker)

DFSeven,
I stand corrected. There does appear to be a 20th century history course offered here at Deerfield. However, as you should know, Modern Times and Ordinary/Extraordinary are Fall/Winter courses. Visit days are in the Spring when these classes were no longer offered, and after carefully perusing the course list I have found no other courses fitting 20th century or third world history description. I believe this issue has been put to rest. Frankly, BF's conversation has deterred the subject of posts away from the issue at hand, as have your explanations of the 7's. If you would like to discuss this completely valid argument, and defend yourself when no one is attacking you (as the 7's were merely mentioned in passing on this forum and never blamed) I suggest you create your own discussion on a separate page.

To all,
The 7's in no way, shape, or form reflect the beliefs of our esteemed academy. Deerfield is a welcoming place for most, if not all. The deans, faculty and staff are a wonderful and compassionate group of human beings who, for the most part, disdain the 7's and support them under no circumstances. I do not wish to get into the 7's themselves or what they stand for, I merely hope to portray to all those viewing this thread what Deerfield truly stands for.

Thank you.

Doesn't Deerfield Academy have its own message board? No? How about a Facebook group?

This thread seems to have run its course and veered way off-topic...
