Deerfield Vs. Milton

According to Prepreview, the ranking for Deerfield and Milton is exactly the same (2nd place for IVY league + MIT Stanford Placement).. Both schools' acceptance rates are also incredibly low and it's really difficult to decline an offer.

I love both Deerfield and Milton but I can only choose one. What do you guys recommend? Any suggestions?

I believe Milton has a more informal atmosphere. Depends on what you are looking for.

That depends on what your interests are. Deerfield is stronger in sport (4hours per day practice for varsity) Milton has rich pre-engineering competition teams, and is a 50/50 day school. Both have unique attributes.

What are you looking for?

Investigate closely the difference between 50/50 boarding/day at Milton and DA, which is very, very heavily boarding. This is a huge difference.

It seems to me like Milton would allow for an easier transition into the Boarding School situation with its 50/50 boarding/day. Also, I have been told Milton is very strong in their English and History, so if you lean towards those subjects (and don’t mind that they don’t have honors programs in those courses) go to Milton.

I don’t know much about Deerfield, but that’s what I’ve learned about Milton.

Though I’m a pretty big proponent of Milton… How would having only a 50% boarding population HELP the transition? jw

If they came from a non-boarding environment, jumping into a place with a high boarding percentage like Deerfield apparently has would be more difficult then going to Milton which is 50% day and more like their original environment (therefore easier to adapt to).

^ It seems to me that it would be a little more difficult to adjust.

I mean, if you have all these friends that live with their parents, you may get lonely knowing that they get to go home every night and you don’t.

A predominantly boarding environment seems like it’d be easier to get used to because all your friends would be boarders, nobody’s going home after 5pm. You’d all be in the same ship.

That is a good point–

It’ll be easier at Milton because its more like your old environment and therefore easier to adapt to

It’ll be easier at Deerfield because all of the new people you meet will feel the same way

I still agree with 1.

I personally am a big Milton fan. Even though I didn’t apply to that school simply because my parents put a limit on the schools I could apply to. I visited both schools Deerfield and Milton and I really loved Milton. You could feel differently, of course. It really depends what you are looking for.

I agree with saying: “It’ll be easier at Milton because its more like your old environment and therefore easier to adapt to”. It would be similar to home.

A boarder is a boarder. Having half of the students at Milton be day students hardly affects the lives of boarders. Living on campus, is not like living at home. If you live on campus, you’re not living at home.

By the way, I’m currently a freshman boarder at Milton and feel free to ask me some questions, I’m a HUGE supporter of my school.

I would personally choose Deerfield, but that’s just me.

WOW! I’m glad to see some serious discussion here… Well, both schools have their pros and cons so it’s really tough to select one. I’m still not really sure what I’m looking for in particular because both schools have plenty to offer.

I personally prefer sciences to arts which might make Deerfield a better option… but since I’m living halfway around the world, I might feel a little uncomfortable living in ‘the middle of nowhere’ thousand of miles away from home. Milton’s location is excellent as it is close to many top universities. Deerfield’s location is also fantastic as the scenary is breathtaking.

I guess for now, I’ll continue to scratch my head…

Go Milton!! It’s in Boston, which is like the best city ever. And because its 50/50 boarding/day, then your day friends will be able to take you into Boston, show you their hometowns, and through your day friends you’ll be able to meet people out of school, so from that your tight-knit community is also an endless pool for friendships. Milton is less intense and more laid-back. Deerfield is very preppy, very athletic, and very intense about everything they do. They HAVE to be the best. Have you seen their insane rivalry with Choate? So competitive! Milton’s by the city, so wherever you live it’ll be easier to get home. And Milton has higher SAT scores. Go Milton!

^ Ahah! Yes, Boston is the most fantabulous city ever!!

yay! these two schools were like 1/2 on my list for a while…

i visited deerfield, and it is really pretty! but it’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere. it is very preppy and athletic, but the facilities are amazing as well (math/science center!). big plus, at least for me…Singles! i think that’s my biggest worry about boarding schools, the dorms…

i didn’t visit milton, but i really like it too. it is sooo close to a major city (Boston!), and with more day students, you can easily go into the city. the academics are also strong, and it is also more laidback then deerfield.

but pretty much, it all comes down to what YOU want. these schools are both amazing…congrats on your acceptances!

Hi Whiz-kid, what’s the basis of “the ranking for Deerfield and Milton is exactly the same (2nd place for IVY league + MIT Stanford Placement)”?

I calculated the 2008 IVY league + MIT Stanford matriculation rates from the data from the website of these schools:

Andover: 32.31%
Deerfield: 23.86%
Milton: 21.74%

I cannot find 2008 data for the other top ones. But if I use the available 3-5 year data, Exeter, Groton and SPS are all somewhere between Andover and Deerfield.

How reliable is your data?

Thanks

The prepreview ranking that’s been posted multiple times in CC is said to be 2008 ranking, but I think it could be based on 2007 data. With Andover, if you look at 2007 data the prepreview number is closer but still not accurate (29% vs. 31%). Not sure how reliable that is.

DF SPS and Milton are all in the 32% to ivies Andover is in 29

principalviola, that’s what we are trying to verify by manually calcualting the percentage based the published data on the school websites. We now know the prepreview data is not consistent with what we got with Andover. And azaz1 was looking at 2008 Deerfield and Milton data and couldn’t get a match, so I suggested that 2007 data if available be used.
