Friend's D is interested in art, music and performance but is not interested in being an artist, musician, or performer. More of a "woman behind the curtain" type. I though Emerson might be a good match. Any suggestions about places with similar programs that prepare people for technical (not business) careers in the arts? State schools welcome.

Does your friends D have an idea what are she might like to work behind the scenes (Film, Theatre, Art, Music Industry), so is she looking for a school that might allow her to explore some of the options to see where she might be happiest in terms of career?

No specific ideas, so exploring options is ideal. Kid is a bit of a late bloomer, has had a rocky time in school, settling down now (as senior - better late than never) with a B average and upward trend.

For an unusual arts offering at a state school, look up Ball State University in Indiana, where David Letterman just gave a fabulous sum to create a brand new media arts training program leading to technical careers in TV and film. I've only seen the website pictures, but the new facility looks terrific.

If Emerson was of interest, how about Ithaca College in upstate NY?

A friend's son loves it at Southwestern in Texas, where he got a very nice merit scholarship plus was accepted to the Sarofim School--their undergrad School of Fine Arts. He is interested in behind-the-scenes programs and had a summer stage management internship at the Alley Theatre in Houston and another with Cirq du Soleil in Las Vegas! Good luck.

Forgot to mention Northeast would be preferable. Ithaca would be an excellent fit (she is from a small town in NH). I had no idea they had relevant programs, thanks for the suggestion. (By the way, the IPEDS site and its "Program and Majors" tab is great for researching this, shows that 15% of Ithaca students graduated with a degree in visual and performing arts, and breaks it down in detail.)
