I was recently deferred by Wake Forest University. I am a nontraditional for the fact that I graduated early and will be volunteering in China until I leave for college next fall. It seemed as if there main reason for deferral was because I have a gap year before college. The admissions counselor stated the school only had one student who had similar circumstances. I was wondering what my chances are for acceptance and what I should send in for material. This is my top school so ANY information would help! I am freaking out a bit. I did not submit my SAT's and added stats below if that would help!

STATS

received the Cambridge ICE diploma

a 1 at Solo Ensemble
4.00 at University of Wisconsin in 315 Human Osteology and 115 Biology ( Dual Credit)

Is the counselor saying that the other student is already attending Wake or that there is only one other student that has applied with similar circumstances?

And what’s your unweighted GPA? That’s an important factor.

Usual advice would be to (1) if they are really your first choice, be sure you communicate this to admissions, and (2) if you have any additional accomplishments that have occurred or do occur since you sent your application, keep the admissions office updates on that information. Don’t pepper them with communications, but a couple of emails between now and say mid-February would be a good idea.

I don’t think your unweighted GPA matters right now, as you are not asking for “chances”. You are asking for advice on how to get them to push your application from the deferred file to the accepted one.

Why didn’t you send your SAT? Do you have SAT or ACT scores that are at or above their 50% mark that you haven’t sent? If so, that could be helpful.

I don’t really understand your comment about only one other student in your circumstance. I have to believe that Wake gets applications from and sometimes accepts students who have taken a gap year. Is there more to this than just graduating last year and taking a gap year? What is your explanation/reason for taking a gap year? That might be a factor, too.
