I was recently deferred from Wake Forest university. I was wondering if anyone would explain to me if my chance is totally over with!!? I am sort of freaking out. I understand what deferrals mean and everything, but what do YOU think it means? i need help figuring this all out!

Deferrals are tough - you are neither here nor there - but left in ambiguous territory. Without knowing your stats - it’s hard to say whether you have any shot in the RD round. I suggest a two-pronged approach. First, send more info to Wake Forest - a letter expressing your sincere interest in attending the school - along with an updated grade report - maybe first trimester or first quarter grades - and perhaps another letter of recommendation. If you have received any awards or honors since sending your application - include those as well.

The second prong is to vigorously pursue other options. If you have not yet applied to any early action or rolling schools - this is the time to do so. Having at least one acceptance by winter break will make you feel much better.

So, don’t give up on Wake - but please pursue other options as well.

RM: the op applied without submitting test scores…

to the OP: since I think you attend a private school, have your college/guidance counselor call Wake and find out if there is something they are looking for before the RD round…

in addition, not sure why you didn’t submit the 29 ACT…? were you advised to do that? just wondering…

IMO, and please note, this is just my opinion, Wake takes their ED candidates who are CLEARLY strong…even though they are SAT/ACT optional, CC has shown that those that are accepted straight out are the tippy-top kids…

OP - I agree with Rodney in that I am surprised you elected to go test optional with a 29 ACT. Their mid-range is 27 - 31, so you are smack in the middle - I would have sent it. Perhaps your GC can call Wake - speak with your regional rep - tell them you have a 29 - and see if they would like it sent. I think that is certainly worth a try.

Thanks Rockville mom. and Rodney.

To explain the ACT situation, when I applied back at the end of June, my GC and I just decided not to submit my scores. Each individual section was pretty inconsistent on the ACT, english (34), math (27), reading (32) and science (24) and my GC thought my grades stood out on its own and since wake is test optional, that it didn’t really matter. since now i am deferred, i took the ACT this last saturday (october 23) and i am hoping i scored higher on the math and science and will most likely send those scores to Wake to update my file. hopefully.

and yes, my GC did call Wake to figure out why I was deferred. They told her I interviewed well, had good extra curriculars, etc. but that since i applied so early (end of June) they wanted to see my performance in my 4 AP classes. I wasn’t as upset after I heard that was the potential reason because now i have motivation to work harder this semester

I would not fret elizabethj. If you are feeling restless and want to be proactive, I would write the admissions committee a short letter reiterating your desire to attend–this will show more interest/initiative on your part. I think you have the right idea to just keep plugging away and doing well in your studies. This is a good lesson for everyone in admissions: work hard and let the pieces fall where they may.
