Deferral to Accepted Chance

Anyone know the chances that an ED deferral at Brown Univ. will become an accepted when considered at regular decision? My D told me close to 60% of applicants get deferred at ED. Does a deferral really mean rejection?

"Does a deferral really mean rejection? "

Does an applicant who applies to RD really mean rejection? For the vast majority, they are.

So what? No amount of statistical analysis of prior trends will have any actual bearing on your file. Your chances are YOUR chances.

Treat this as just an RD application.

Deferral does not mean rejection. If Brown didn’t want your daughter, they would have just rejected her. As T26E4 says, just treat Brown now as though she was applying RD - she’ll have an equal chance to all the other RD applicants. I know several people who were deferred then accepted.

Do you think there is anyway to help a deferral become an accepted? Perhaps, more recommendations?

I would think that, all other things being equal, you would be chosen over a similar candidate in the RD round because you have already demonstrated exceptional intent to attend if selected.

Unfortunately, Lorem, that’s not necessarily the case. Brown considers anyone who applies to be very interested in attending and there are (believe it or not) enough applicants who are deferred ED and in the end decide to go elsewhere.

To chinablue: your daughter should write a letter or email to admissions, expressing her continued interest in going to Brown. This is a good time to emphasize anything not already elaborated in her application. Only do an additional recommendation if it adds something to her application – like from an employer or coach. If anything happens in the next 3 months – she wins any awards, for example, she should notify admissions.

To answer your original question, Brown has never (to my knowledge) published any info on the acceptance rate of deferred applicants. And enough deferred students have been accepted, so that it is not considered a rejection.

Does Brown accept February.9th 2013 ACT test scores for regular decision? I’m deferred in the early round and want to improve my chances by sending higher test scores…
