Does anyone know of someone who was deferred from Brown ED and was later accepted in the RD round? I’m just curious to see how common it is and if there is any kind of a trend between those that are accepted in the end and those just rejected.
My interviewer’s daughter applied ED and got deferred, but was accepted in the end. However, she was double legacy… So I’m wondering if that is a pattern.
Brown has said publicly that the acceptance rate of deferred ED applicants is the same as the overall regular decision admit rate. So yes, deferred students do get accepted RD.
@fireandrain I know that the rates are the same, but I’m specifically looking for examples of people in the past who were deferred and then accepted. I’m just curious to know if there’s a pattern, and to see their stats and basic application info to judge my chances. I am well aware that it’s just a shot in the dark.
What type of pattern do you think there would be? Since Brown aims for diversity, I doubt you’d see any patterns. People can’t figure out patterns for regular admits, where the numbers are significantly higher. And the waitlist is typically used to fill in gaps – if no tuba players accepted an offer they’ll accept tuba players; next year it might be dancers and the year before kids from Utah.
If you are really determined and have time to waste, I suggest you do a deep dive into this forum. Search for entries in May and June for the past 10 years by students who were accepted off the waitlist and then look at their stats. Most of them are no longer posting here to answer your question, so that’s probably the only way to get an answer.
Actually I have a quick update and questions: I just got an email from Amherst offering me an early notification for acceptance and am beyond excited (but sadly it’s not one of my top choices). Seeing as only a selective group of applicants are given an early notification, could this possibly signify that I have a decent, as in above average, chance of getting into Brown after being deferred?
This is probably a very stupid question and it’s entirely subjective, but I honestly never expected to even get into Amherst so I’m wondering if my application is a lot stronger than I thought? (entirely wishful thinking there)
Also, I know my admissions to Amherst wasn’t based on info Brown didn’t receive (like a really good essay that Amherst got but not Brown) so it’s not that…
Well seeing as you got into Amherst, you are clearly a stellar applicant. But seeing as you were deferred from Brown, you weren’t quite at the top of their applicant pool. I wouldn’t worry at this point whether you will get into Brown, as Amherst is a phenomenal school.
Congratulations!
Regarding the likely letter, congratulations; I’m sorry it’s not a top pick for you. I don’t think it signals anything else from other top colleges, though, since they are all trying to form a class and one may be looking for or needing something this year that another doesn’t. It shows you are a very qualified candidate, but I don’t think it necessarily means you will get into Brown. I don’t mean to say that you don’t have a chance - I think it depends on who they are looking for at this point to round out their class.
I know how hard this is. I know that waiting is agony. But no one can divine your chances. You’ll know in less than a month. In the grand scheme of life, the next 25 or so days is really a blip. Go read a good book or watch a movie.
Keep faith in yourself! My daughter was deferred and was then accepted in regular decision.
Also no legacy hook. Good luck!
@AZ1964 Wow thanks! That’s really nice to know. Could you possibly tell me a bit about your daughter’s application, like her basic stats, essays, and ECs? I’m just curious to know how she got in after being deferred.
She was in the top 5% of her class, I.B, musician, strong recs I am guessing, student leadership, model un, act scores between 29 and 33. Probably a strong candidate even in e.d, but just had to wait it out until regular decision. From the southwest. Don’t give of hope and best of luck!
Just to update the thread, I got in after being deferred! And I know of two other people who also got in after ED, although the acceptance rate was much lower this year (5.4% for deferred)
