deferral vs. more information

for one of my schools (michigan) people are getting 2 letters

1="you're deferred"
2="send us your fall term grades in order for us to have more information"

which is "better," or should provide a larger sense of security? clearly, if the school is sending out to different letters to "deferred" people then there must be a difference between the applicants..but does anybody know what both mean?

I think both of them are essentially the same thing -- in both cases, they are going to consider your application further. but #2 is slightly better because

1) if your fall term grades are really good, you have the opportunity to increase your chances.
2) you won't necessarily have to wait until April like the deferred kids -- if they get your fall term grades in January and they are good, you may get admitted in February.
