I was deferred back in November, but didn’t receive any substantial awards so I did not update Brown adcoms. If I didn’t contact Brown and tell them that the school is still my first choice, is that a death sentence? I didn’t think extra updates on minor things would help at all, but my friend is saying that they need to see that you’re still interested in the school.

Any thoughts? Anyone got deferred, didn’t update Brown, and still got accepted?

I was deferred back in December and I take their explanation very seriously. They defer you because they want to take a second look at your application b/c they beleived that you were a credible applicant and the fact that you applied ED shows that you are passionate about the school. If you kept your grades up and gave them any information that they needed, then you have as much of a chance as any other RD applicant to get in. If you felt that the update was not necessary, then it probably wasn't. Trust me, CC represents a bias view of what students are doing to improve their chances.

While you could certainly still be admitted, it is true that Brown likes to hear from deferred applicants that the school is still their first choice. I've heard this from admissions officers, so I have reason to believe it's true. Your letter doesn't need to have updates, but just express continued interest and perhaps give some information that wasn't in your initial application. I am sure kids have been accepted without sending a letter -- but in my mind, if you really want to go to a school, why not spend the time and effort it takes to write a letter?

I guess its too late at this point, but I wish you the best of luck! I am sure that there are people that have gotten in after a deferral without supplemental letters or material.

And you're probably right, there's little I can do at this point.

Sly_vt, I thought I was demonstrating that Brown is my first choice by applying there ED. My teachers all communicated this in their letters of recs, and I spent time on all my essays so it was pretty obvious that I knew Brown was a good fit and I loved the school since freshman year. I didn't send them a letter proclaiming my love for Brown again because I thought it was a waste of a time for the adcoms (not me) to have to read another love letter from a kid declaring how Brown is still their first choice, etc etc etc.

Honestly, I thought that them giving us permission to update them (and I had little things to update them with) and write extraneous letters was more to settle our nerves rather than to help the adcoms reach a decision.

Oh well, we'll see in a couple of days.

EDIT: Thanks for the PM, but I'm using my friend's account (never bothered to sign up for CC) to ask this question, so I probably won't be able to see them. Thanks for taking the time to answer, though!
