Deferred Applying Elsewhere ED II?

My son was deferred ED I. I have read that being deferred from Tufts is really not a "soft" no. Admission has said that in order to be deferred from Tufts you really did have to be close to getting an acceptance. Tufts continues to be his number 1 choice. However, I think there are other schools that he may have a better chance for admission if he went ED II to them. I was anxious to hear from other deferred applicants if you are waiting on Tufts or applying ED II to any other schools? Also, has anyone ever seen any statistics about how many deferrals actually end up accepted during RD?

Clearly there are people who are deferred ED who are later accepted, but it’s so based on the individual application and what the RD applicant pool looks like that I don’t know how meaningful statistics are. PResumably he applied to Tufts ED because that was truly his first choice. If that’s the case, and he wound up getting in ED2 to another school, might he later feel buyer’s remorse, wondering whether he could have gotten in to Tufts RD? If so, then he should ride out the RD at Tufts. If not - which would presume that he basically likes one or more other schools just as much - then a “strategic” view of ED makes more sense.
My son happened to get into Tufts ED1, but if he had been deferred (we were pretty sure he wouldn’t be rejected outright), he would have waited it out until April.

just going to offer a counter-view—our daughter was also accepted ED1, but she had decided to go ED2 elsewhere if deferred. Although Tufts was her clear first choice there were two others that she really liked also and felt that applying ED boosts one’s chances (I happen to agree) and that there was nothing about her application that was going to change so if Tufts wasn’t going to accept her in the early round it probably wasn’t going to in the regular round either. It does seem to be true that Tufts is genuine about a deferral—nevertheless, we know people who were deferred and didn’t ultimately get in (as well as people who did). I think if I were in your/your son’s shoes, I would be trying to figure out the reason for deferral to see if it’s something that he might be able to correct—e.g., was there a slip in grades during the first quarter that Tufts is hoping to see turn around (this seems to have been the case with the deferred students we know who eventually got in). Best of luck—Tufts is great but I’ll bet his second choice is too.

I thank you both for your points of view. My son has decided to wait it out and hope for an acceptance during RD. As Tufts clearly was and still is his top choice he wants to see how it all plays out. I think there may have been a bit of a slip during the first quarter grades but his second quarter should be all A’s and he hopes that will help!
