If candidates with deferred decisions still have a good shot at Fall 2010? My son was deferred even though friends who had lower GPAs or SATs got in... made no sense. He also got into the Penn State School of Engineering and scholarship money at UMBC. We are having his first semester HS grades sent to UM now (4.29 weighted)... anyone know anything about this? Anyone in the same boat? Are we at least looking at a Spring Admission?

Anyone else in this situation? I’m hearing that the deferred applicants have a good shot at admission with regular admission since the apps have already been vetted and they are in the mix.

First, UMBC is PART of UMDCP. There is a fallacy that UMBC is somehow connected with UMDCP.

Second, the friends who got in may have been accepted for multiple reasons:
A. Not the same Major
B. EC’s
C. HS curriculum…same gpa does not equate to same course rigors…for example, your DS took AP Chem and ended there, the others took AP Physics.

As far as deferment, from previous yrs I recall many that were deferred who got in, but the downside is they got general admit for Fall. Deferment does not mean NO it means that they need to take a closer look.

Actually, UMBC is ** not ** part of UMCP. It is under the U of M umbrella, but it’s an entity separate from College Park and a good engineering school in its own right.

Did the online admit page actually say “deferred?” My D’s said not admitted for Fall 2010, but you have a spot in Spring 2011. No mention of waitlist. Is this what you mean by “deferred?”

If so, I’d be interested if there is any chance for fall admittance (I already had figured that was not going to happen). I’m thinking this will all be outlined in the mailing that we eventually get.

No. Online page basically said they have not made a decision and want to see the first semester grades for senior year. Good news is that the first semester of senior year is at 4.29.

I was deferred also. I got the message saying they want to review my application with the RD applicants and get back to me by April 1. Definitely not my first choice, but here’s hoping…

I e-mailed somebody from UMD today and if you are deferred, you are NOT placed with the RD applicants. Just with all the other EA applicants for a final review and decision.

Thanks jokerbaby… sounds like there might be a good chance if the grades improve or are good. Was this someone from admissions or who knows well about this? A person I spoke to said the same thing, but she worked with admissions 8 years ago and things have a tendency to change over time.

It was someone who works in admissions so I am positive. :)

Jokerbaby is right on the money. We have since contacted the admissions counselor, and there was an anomaly during sophomore year. Essentially they wanted to look at the first semester of senior year, but all should be good at 4.36.
