Deferred Early Action from Tulane

Well, let’s put it this way. If you think that winning the Paul Tulane will put Tulane at the top of your list, then I recommend contacting your admissions officer and letting them know the level of your interest in Tulane. If you honestly think that even if you win the PTA you are more likely to attend one of the other schools you might still be waiting to hear from, then I would just wait and see what happens.

@fallenchemist

I don’t know where it would put Tulane, as I cannot really get an impression of the feel of Tulane until I see it.

Then I guess there is nothing to do but wait and see how the PTA turns out. But you will hear one way or the other.

@fallenchemist

Do you know when I will hear about that?

It is hard to say for sure, since the PTA has such a short history. But before it seemed to come in 2 waves. A lot of people got the news in the third week of February, and then some more in about the second week of March, at least according to posts on here from people that got the award. But no telling if it will be the same this year. I would say it is unlikely to be any earlier than that.

Does anyone know how/ when we would get notified if we get accepted after deferral? Is it all the way until April 1? Thanks!

I got deferred early action and I just checked Gibson today and I got in!

Wow, that’s great Ivramirez! Congratulations.

thank you, fallenchemist!

I just got in from the deferred list!

How were you all able to see your decisions?

It will show up on your Gibson page first, then confirmation will arrive in the snail mail.

I’m glad to have found this thread. My daughter has 3 friends who are top students who were deferred… possibly there was also no demonstrated interest on their part either? They’ve all been just floored by the decision. This at least helps them to understand.

Hopefully it will, jocjarmom. This happens every single year, at least for the last few. It bruises the ego of a high achieving student who isn’t used to not “acing” this kind of thing, especially since Tulane, while highly selective, is not as selective as Harvard, Duke, Stanford, etc. So not only do their egos take a bit of a hit, but some of them get downright frightened because now they think they won’t get accepted anywhere except Big State U. So understanding why Tulane (and some other schools, this isn’t unique to Tulane) does this hopefully not only mends their bruises but also helps them realize that it is no indication whatsoever as to their chances at those other schools.

It can be kind of tough for students like them, in the sense that if they don’t get into those HYPS type schools (because they are always a crapshoot to some degree) and they don’t get into the excellent private schools like Tulane that are at that next level of selectivity, then what? That is why kids cast such a wide net on admissions these days. It is a lot tougher than a couple of decades ago.

Does anyone know where the mid-year grade report form is?

I am not aware that there is such a thing for Tulane. I don’t believe you are obligated to send those grades. If you want to because you want Tulane to know you had a great semester, just have your GC send them to your admissions officer at Tulane.

Deferred students were requested to send those mid-year grades. Just send to the same place as earlier grades. No report needed.

Thanks for that correction, @AL34. I completely forgot that they asked for those grades from deferred students. And you are correct, the GC should know where to send them based on the earlier submissions.

I saw at our school, kids who got WL and those were accepted. Some discrepancy, IMO of some stats. I am pretty sure that Tulane was told that some of those kids would definitely show up if getting an accept. I know for one kid, it was his absolute first choice and the school, his recommenders and he made it very, very clear. And he’s there. Demonstrated interest can be a very powerful thing for schools like Tulane. A counselor with a proven track record with the college of coming through saying that Tulane is A1 for the kid can make a very big difference.

@cptofthehouse - Absolutely. Although technically they got deferred, not wait listed. Getting in off the WL in April is more a matter of available space than demonstrated interest, although the latter still counts of course.
