My daughter was deferred and I don’t recall any request asking for midyear grades. Was this request made when she got the original deferment or is it something people are getting in more recent emails?

IIRC, it was in the deferral letter. But my memory on this is fuzzy. Still, if your D is truly wanting to go to Tulane and if her first semester was a good one, it would make sense to let Tulane know both things.

It was in the deferral letter.

She did very well her first quarter and then got a job at the Gap, worked too many hours and her grades fell. Nothing horrible but definitely could be enough to swing Tulane into declining her :-(
Directly after getting the deferral letter she had gotten another recommendation, her first term grades and some additional information into the school and also has sent periodic emails to her Tulane admin counselor so they know we are interested. However, even if she gets in I doubt at this point we can afford it. We are part of the Tuition Exchange program since my husband works at another College and we were hoping to get free tuition at Tulane if she got in, but since that program is competitive and I’m assuming depends somewhat on a student’s academic record, I think her second term grades have sealed her, and our, fate…

Well, you never know. It would be her worth mentioning to Tulane that she was working at the Gap X hours a week. They understand things happen. Nothing to lose.

myjanda- we are in the tuition exchange program too and Tulane does not give free tuition as part of the exchange, they cover 75% of tuition. Still not bad, but it’s very competitive from what I hear.

Thanks dolphnlvr6, I didn’t realize it was “only” 75% - not sure if it changed since I first started looking or was always that percent, but as you said, still nothing to complain about.
Tulane offers the tuition exchange to 41-60% of the students who request it, which is a larger percentage than all the other schools my D is applying to and overall a very good rate for such a desirable and competitive school.
Oh well, what will be will be, I keep telling myself during this very stressful time! Good luck to everyone here!!

I think they just changed the % this year (figures). But they do accept a high percentage. My friends son is applying to Boston University and they only accept 10%. I’m a nervous wreck waiting to hear. I don’t want to get my hopes up. Good luck to your D!

@dolphnlvr6 - thank you. In total shock since I just checked the gibson site on a whim and found out my D was accepted!! Wow. Life just got way more complicated for us, since money will be a big issue but boy it feels good and she will be so excited. I’m going crazy waiting for her to get out of school so I can tell her…
Good luck to you as well!

Myjanda,

Don’t tell her that she was accepted. Tell her that you’ve read here on CC that some deferred EA’s are finding decisions on Gibson. Tell her to check, and wait for the screaming!

I agree with AsleepAtTheWheel - It seems to me this is her acceptance and it will be more fun for her to find out for herself.

Hopefully the money part works out so she can attend.

I wish I had thought of that (or had the self control to do it if I had) but I am at work and couldn’t keep the news to myself that long! She actually thought I was kidding and made me send her a text of the Gibson webpage! She is over the moon and we are both enjoying the moment…

Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting!

LOL, the important thing is that she is happy, you are happy, and that you both enjoyed it. Sounds like you two have that kind of close relationship to be able to share it in this way. Any special celebration plans?

@fallenchemist - funny you say that - we ARE very close and Tulane is the school the furthest from us she applied to - we live in MA. And previously a part of me was almost hoping she wouldn’t get in because I really hate the idea of her being so far away, although I feel that in every other way Tulane is the perfect school for her. Most of her friends are staying much closer to home (helps that Boston is such a great college town). And it is so tough to get to New Orleans from Boston! But I truly couldn’t be happier for her at the news. I think we will hold off any real celebrations though until we see if we can make it work financially. But we will go visit for sure and that will in and of itself be a great celebration - I love NOLA!!

@myjanda - This is the first time I have noticed that they no longer list the location of the poster underneath their screen name. If this new format still did that, you would see I am in Rhode Island. And you might have seen in other posts that my D just graduated from Tulane in December, so I know about getting from here to there. It isn’t really that bad. We took Southwest every time, and for most of the flights you change planes once in (usually) Baltimore, Chicago or Orlando. There was even one flight a day that stopped in Orlando but you didn’t have to change planes. That was from Providence, not sure about from Boston. So while not ideal, it really wasn’t too bad.

IMO, once they get more than a couple hundred miles away, it doesn’t make much difference where they are. They get all caught up in college life and, after getting over the initial shock of home sickness, they don’t come home much anyway. For us, at least, the adventure of being in New Orleans made for a different kind of closeness. Then again, being a Tulane alum it was a shared experience so that contributed. But it makes a huge difference in their growing up when they are on their own like that.

Let us all know when you visit. We would enjoy hearing how it went. Oh, and btw, what are her stats, if you don’t mind sharing? Is it possible she would get a merit scholarship?

At least now you don’t have to worry about sending those mid-term grades. Or had you done that already?

@myjanda Congratulations to your D! Very exciting! :-bd

@fallenchemist - I wish every school had someone like you on their forum!! I was so relieved back in December when I found this thread because when I saw the deferral I had the EXACT concerns you describe; worrying that he wouldn’t get in anywhere. And that has not happened. He has gotten in to several great schools. But we followed your advice and had him submit Paul Tulane app and email his ac. Now I just checked back into this thread and I see that several deferral have turned to acceptances so I just checked Gibson and his still has not. What do you make of this?

@njl1022 - Thanks for the kind words. And congrats on the acceptances so far. Always nice when you have several good options in hand already, no matter what happens elsewhere.

I wouldn’t make anything of the lack of a change in his status at Tulane. There are numerous variables and it does come down to small differences in individual cases sometimes. For example, he might have a different admissions officer than those that have seen their deferrals become acceptances. They don’t all work at the same pace, and even if they did they have a lot of applicants to review. They just might not have gotten to his yet. Also, has he sent in his first semester grades yet?

At this stage there really is nothing to do but be patient. Fortunately having those other acceptances makes that much easier. Is there a favorite school among the acceptances he has gotten so far?

Any info on the % of admitted students off the deferral list?

@fallenchemist Actually yes at another forum that I have seen you on. He got a very generous offer from Miami and may even get more. And he also got a LOT from Northeastern. We went to their accepted student day over the weekend and all of us were very impressed by the chemistry department. The chairman was awesome and seemed very dedicated to the kids succeeding no matter what track they were interested in pursuing within chemistry. The problem was the campus. My son really doesn’t want such an urban campus. He’s also gotten into U Del and Villanova but those are pretty much out of the running by now. NOTHING is easy about this process. And yes I believe his hs has already sent in first semester grades.
