Deferred Early Action from Tulane

@chances1please - I don’t think there is any way to know that information. I have never seen it reported.

@njl1022 - Miami is indeed a fine school and perhaps Tulane’s closest competitor. Similar academic stats for their students, similar merit $$ structure, both considered warm weather schools although obviously Miami is more consistently warmer, so on and so forth. Naturally there are some differences as well, how significant they are depends mostly on the preferences of the student, I think. I only got involved on that one topic on their forum because some of the people on this forum were having issues with their Staples scholarship weekend. I just couldn’t believe they handle it the way they apparently do, and wanted to check it out for myself.

Northeastern is basically in my back yard, kind of. My S also looked at it and felt pretty much the same way about the very urban campus. But no question they have some strong programs and a very interesting approach to handling internships.

I have been continually surprised at how many people that apply to Tulane also apply to Delaware. I actually know that school pretty well because they have a very strong biochem department.

You are right, those are strong results so far. You and he must be elated. Best of luck with Tulane and any others he is waiting for.

Funny because my D also applied and was accepted at Delaware and I wouldn’t have thought there was much overlap, but shows how much I know about these things! We are going to visit both (and Pitt, where she was also accepted) as we haven’t been to any yet. So far only got money at Delaware, but that was a very pleasant surprise.

@fallenchemist - My D is not nearly as strong as some of the other students who have gotten in so we are truly pleased. Her GPA is 3.4 and she got 650 on CR and Math. It’s a pretty smart HS so not sure of her rank but she is not in the top 10%. She has studied abroad and does some great community service projects and clubs so I think those are what tipped the scales in her favor.
She’s waiting to hear on a few other schools but Tulane is her top choice.

@njl1022 - lots of very bright students at our HS applied and were waitlisted to Northeastern so that is great that your son got in and got money from them. Congratulations!

Sorry, not waitlisted, but deferred to regular admission…

@myjanda - I have never quite figured out the Delaware-Tulane crossover either. I could speculate that Delaware is one of the smaller state schools, and so there might be some appeal there. Pitt is another one that strongly competes with Tulane for applications, but that is more understandable in that while it is a state school, it seems more like a private in some ways.

Pitt and Delaware have almost identical stats for incoming students, both of which are what I would say call a “notch” below Tulane’s, about 50-70 points on the SAT per category. My son is in his last semester of law school at Pitt. Pitt has one of the strongest foreign language and culture programs in the country, and he was a Russian major at another school. Pitt offers a dual program with law and Eastern European studies, which was attractive to him. In fact, the whole thing netted him a full ride to Pitt Law because of a special program for people with key foreign language skills. So much for people that say degrees like Russian don’t pay off!

Your D is a solid match for Tulane. Her stats are around the midpoint, maybe a hair below, and it sounds like she was very involved at her school and elsewhere, so I think the whole package just sounds like Tulane. So I am not so surprised she got in. I hope she does indeed become a Green Wave.

My son applied EA well before the deadline, then had to wait pretty deep into the period in November when the decisions were released, only to find out that he was deferred. After seeing (on this thread) last week that some additional EA decisions had been released I told him to check Gibson, and he discovered that he’d been admitted. Yesterday (eight days later) the official letter arrived. Will post stats in the ‘Decisions’ thread.

Just accepted after a deferral- 2310 SAT and 4.46 W GPA

Congrats to all the EA deferrals who have since been admitted. Just checked Gibson for my daughter - no change in message. They will try to tell us as soon as possible and no later than April 1st. Will keep checking back…

@Socaldad14 no change in my son’s status either. I remember you from earlier in this thread; he has similar stats to your daughter. Very strange. And I see on another thread that others are already hearing from Paul Tulane. I’m thinking this is not happening for my son…

njl1022, based on the latest postings in the other thread, I am going to keep a positive attitude and hope that a UPS package will be sent to us both by the end of this week. Tulane Admissions does have a challenging task with students like ours. Do they admit everyone with high stats and get a low yield, or wait to see what happens with ED apps? My daughter did not apply to any school ED because finances will play a big role in her choice (maybe she should have pointed that out). So far she has been accepted to 3 schools and has encouraging news from another three. If she were lucky enough to get a PTA, Tulane would jump to the top of her list and we would be planning a family trip to NO. In hindsight, we would have helped her case by visiting the campus. We live too far away to make that happen. Let’s hope we both get positive news by this Friday.

OK SoCalDad14 I will try and stay positive too despite my inherently pessimistic nature ( I am a new Yorker no surprise). I am sort of fascinated by Tulane’s strategy though and I don’t really like it. They were emailing my son almost daily to get him to complete the “free” application, only to defer him! Now I know they just want to increase their selectivity by getting more applicants but this all seems sort of slimy. And the kids they accepted from my son’s high school were really not anymore well rounded and that’s not sour grapes. They just have the stats that are good but not too good. In retrospect, you are right, we probably should have visited too but these trips get very expensive. What are your daughters other options if you don’t mind me asking? I mentioned my son’s a couple of posts back.

My stats aren’t the best- grades saw great improvement, however as the years went on. Only a 1770 SAT score. I have very extensive EC’s- a lot of community service, work experience, leadership, etc… A few weeks after I was deferred I sent an additional letter of rec to the admissions team and just last wednesday I emailed the rep for my area (norcal). I haven’t gotten a response from her yet. Do I stand a chance? Starting to get very nervous!!

@USD123, for what it’s worth, I think you do still have a chance and the fact that you haven’t yet gotten a no confirms it. My D got in with grades probably only a bit better than yours (she was first deferred then accepted) and I think a lot has to do with her community service. So I think the fact that you are strong in that area is great! Our rep was very nice but she either didn’t have real information to give us when we were waiting, or wasn’t going to share it, so I wouldn’t let the fact that you haven’t heard from yours worry you too much. It’s all a crap shoot but you are still in the game so hang in there and I wish you the very best. Let us know if you end up getting the good news!

Tulane has been closed for mardi gras, and now it is spring break. Do not expect to hear from your rep for awhile, and unfortunately, your rep will not be able tell you anything.

We also are waiting in limbo. Tulane is the dream, but without a decision and very little time to assess financial possibilties if we get a good answer, we’re starting to give up hope and make plans for State school. I wish they didn’t wait until the last moment to make decisions. A flat out “No” may be kinder than leaving a sliver of hope.

At worst you will have one month to decide. Maybe you disagree but that seems like adequate time to me. Probably you will have one or two weeks more than that. You know, a lot of schools reply to everyone in the RD round at the same time, often only a couple of days before the April 1 deadline.

At this busy time of year, does the admissions office actually close for spring break??

They posted on their facebook page they were closed from Friday to yesterday for Mardi Gras. Very typical of any business in NOLA. Everyone likes to give their employees time to enjoy Mardi Gras with their family and friends.

Right, there is little sense for anyone to show up the Monday and Tuesday of Mardi Gras. That would be cruel, not to mention useless. But they were back at work Wednesday. Student breaks and staff breaks are not the same. In fact, normally Tulane is back at school the Wednesday after Mardi Gras. But the timing of Mardi Gras this year led Tulane to make it roll into their Spring Break. The students also get off the Friday and Monday bookending Easter.

Same situation here as some others, deferred EA, no decision as of yet, no “sorry” email for DHS. Expressed interest to his admit counselor and received positive replies. Similar stats and good ECs to many accepted on here. This is the only college decision left outstanding. Dropped from the top of his list to (basically) off of it entirely. This is dragging on and DS is finalizing his decisions without it.

@AL34 - Understandable that he would move on. I am sure he has excellent other choices. Who is at the top of his list now?
