Deferred for University of Michigan. Now tips on being accepted !

I have been deferred from the early response program at UMichigan. I am an International student attending a CBSE curriculum school. I called up the admissions office and they did not tell me the reason for being rejected.

I am someone who really considers UMichigan as her one and only choice.I love the school and I really want to be there. Where as the student part is considered I am in the Top 5-10% of my class. The curriculum I have been taking is one of the most rigorous in the world. My essay's were good according to my teacher's and my family (I told them about myself and about I would like to pull all nighter's at the Shapiro library and describing my characteristics) and the school spirit I have with in me (which Michigan is popular for).

I did not choose Michigan because it is highly ranked for my course by US News but because it fits my requirements and I want to go there. Where as there are many people who go to Michigan just because their precious Ivies reject them.

SO my question, what can I possibly do in order to gain admission in UMich. I cannot send UMich any grades from my school as I have already sent them the most recent grades from my School and the next exam is in March (whose results will be out in July 2010) and where as my SAT score is concerned I have made a leap from 1500 to 1980 and I cannot take the January SAT since I am preparing for my March (board) exams which I cannot possibly screw up as they are very important and tough.

My EC's are very good . I have been a post holder for the past two years (when the post's are actually given out to students). I am the head of two Student organizations and part of the computer club.

Michigan is my dream and I ask you people to help me achieve it. What can I do in order to get in ? Please give me specific information on how to go about this process.

Thanks a lot in advance.
Kristin

I don’t there’s some secret to being admitted. You’ve done your best, set up an alternative incase you are rejected.

First off, Michigan is a highly ranked university (#27), nationally and internationally (#19) by USNWR.

It is hard to gain acceptance as an international student. When you are deferred from Michigan, they often want you to send them your most recent grades from the year you are currently in.

DO NOT send Michigan a letter describing to them how badly you want to get in. All you can do is wait and see what happens. In case you don’t get accepted make sure you have a back up.

i am also an international student, i have near perfect stats and lots of good ECs with leadership positions - but i got deferred anyways.
it is tricky, at least to some extent, how the system works.
i hate to say it, but still, have a backup and you cannot do anything about Michigan right now.

After multiple individualized and comprehensive evaluations of your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2010, we believe that you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year’s freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2010.

Please refer to the website [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Be sure your U-M ID XXXXXXXX is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,
Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

What do I do ? … My exam is on march and the results come out in July !

BUMP ^^^ … please

Well University of Michigan want’s to see your 7th semester grades not 8th. Though it is not required for you to send any additional material to get a final decision with possibility of acceptance, though sending your 7th semester grades may enhance your chances of being accepted.

IS there someone who I can contact ?

I agree that sending in updated grades and or test scores would help. Also, I don’t know what your summer plans are, but maybe it would be a good idea to say that you could go for the summer term. They might let you in that way as a summer admit.

I tried calling them and to try to have my application be both summer and fall. They wouldn’t let me do that. They said I could change it to summer, but they said that’s not likely to help (I don’t know how true that is though).

Did you guys also get in ER ?

I was deferred (last year) and then I got in after being deferred.

Did you send in a letter or any other materials to increase ur chances ?

No, I sent my grades and that’s it.

Being deferred is far from hopeless. I bet they admit something like 25-30% of the people they defer. If your stats are competitive then you’ve got a good chance still.

LMAO, are u serious? how many copies of this thread have u made?? anyways…

i got this letter, as well, & just realized that they aren’t even asking for 7th semester grades 0o. would it be a bad idea to send them if they’re only so-so? also, is anyone planning on submitting an updated resume? it might be a little weird, like “continuation of last resume, PLUS ___” lol, not exactly sure how that would work, yet :/

Actually I have made only one thread, but I have posted it on almost all the forums.
I called up the office of admissions and they told me they don’t wnat anything else from me and all I have to do is wait.

I am planning to send them my prelim grades , an updated resume and a letter from my counselor.

^they told u they don’t want anything & you’re still sending stuff in? they might not even look at it…idk, i guess i have to figure this one out for myself. awesome :|

I don’t know people . That is why I am approaching you people so that you can let me know what I should be doing !

Kristin, there is very little you can do. Michigan will request your first semester grades from senior year. If there are any new developments, such as being made captain of a varsity team, you can write a short (50-100 word paragraph) updating Michigan on your progress.

Beyond that, there isn’tmuch you can do at this stage.

Thanks a lot for the advice.

DO you have an Idea about when I will be getting my final decision ?
