Deferred for University of Michigan. Now tips on being accepted !

I have been deferred from the early response program at UMichigan. I am an International student attending a CBSE curriculum school. I called up the admissions office and they did not tell me the reason for being rejected.

I am someone who really considers UMichigan as her one and only choice.I love the school and I really want to be there. Where as the student part is considered I am in the Top 5-10% of my class. The curriculum I have been taking is one of the most rigorous in the world. My essay's were good according to my teacher's and my family (I told them about myself and about I would like to pull all nighter's at the Shapiro library and describing my characteristics) and the school spirit I have with in me (which Michigan is popular for).

I did not choose Michigan because it is highly ranked for my course by US News but because it fits my requirements and I want to go there. Where as there are many people who go to Michigan just because their precious Ivies reject them.

SO my question, what can I possibly do in order to gain admission in UMich. I cannot send UMich any grades from my school as I have already sent them the most recent grades from my School and the next exam is in March (whose results will be out in July 2010) and where as my SAT score is concerned I have made a leap from 1500 to 1980 and I cannot take the January SAT since I am preparing for my March (board) exams which I cannot possibly screw up as they are very important and tough.

My EC's are very good . I have been a post holder for the past two years (when the post's are actually given out to students). I am the head of two Student organizations and part of the computer club.

Michigan is my dream and I ask you people to help me achieve it. What can I do in order to get in ? Please give me specific information on how to go about this process.

Thanks a lot in advance.
Kristin

Be sure to write them and tell them how you feel. If you write what you wrote here, I’m sure they’d see your sincerity, and that’s important. Aside from that, send them any new information you can: awards, updates on on-going projects.

Typically public universities make their decisions overwhelmingly based on scores, grades and state of residence, so to increase your chances, raise your scores. That will be far more important to Michigan than how much you desire to go there, something that typiclly isn’t important for admission to public universities.

Yeah, I would reconsider trying to squeeze in time for studying for the SAT more.

The SAT is what is going to hold you back, if anything…it’s a little on the low side for UMich.

(As long as the Jan. scores would even get there in time for decisions purposes…you’d have to call and ask)

I agree with Nothstarmom and umcp11. You HAVE to make time to study for the SAT in January if you want to have more than a slim chance, and yes you can if you set your mind to it. Study as hard as you can between now and the test.

Wish you the best.

Keep your grades up too. The last thing you want is for your mid year report to show dropping grades.

Kristin, in case you haven’t figured it out, we think you should retake the SAT. :)

It’s the one piece of your app you can meaningfully change at this point. You might be able to raise your GPA a bit and go up in ranking a spot or two, but with a 1980 there is a lot of room for improvement; breaking the 2000 barrier (and, hopefully, something higher) would have the biggest impact on your app at a large public uni.

Good luck!

Your current SAT - 1980 - is right at the overall median for UMich. But consider that almost a third of UMich students are from out of state, and the university’s primary mission is to serve its own state residents. I would guess that the SAT median for in-state students might be well below 1980 while that for the out-of-state students would be considerably higher than 1980.

I’m surprised that I’m the first to comment that of course UM is not your one and only choice. It’s never wise to count too heavily on admission to any top school. You’re obviously a great student. Just make sure you keep that up in college, wherever you go, and you’ll be fine.
