So I got deferred yesterday. I was surprised, although I know EA at Tech becomes increasingly competitive each year. I had so many extracurriculars on my application- president of schools Mock Trial team ,founder and president of schools literary society, FBLA, and a lot of volunteering and honors programs including the honors program of a community college that I take classes from. My math SAT is a 620 and my CR is 680. I know that is below average for Tech but my friend who is a guy got in with a 1270/1600. I am a legacy and a girl so I thought that would help my chances.

What should I do to increase my chances of getting in?

Thank you so much to anyone who can give me insight.

Yes. Many people do not realize, but the SATs are all about practice, practice, practice.

I know a kid, not the most brilliant, but an extremely hard worker, who spent about an hour a day (not an exaggeration) on the SATs for about half a year. His scores increased from below a 2000 to a 2340. The CollegeBoard did an inquiry into him, they suspected him of cheating. They interviewed his family, teachers, etc. But there was no foul play to be found.

Get a big SAT prep book and do it start to finish. if you have time, buy a 2nd, from a different company, and do the same. You’ll see a massive improvement if you work hard.

Also, I am like you, in the same boat. Deferred from Tech when i thought I had the grades and SATs to have GT on lock. I guess admissions get harder every year. Check out my own thread I started about it. Very similar stuff going to many kids at Tech this year.

Thank you for the encouragement and advice. I have been told by some of my friends to just leave it be, but I really feel like I should at least TRY to improve my score. I’m going to start studing for it five days a week until the sat on Jan 26th.

I’m sorry you got deferred! I was totally not prepared for it and it’s left me feeling pretty helpless. Yeah, Tech is getting crazy. Alright, I will check it out!
