Deferred from NC State

Today, I received a decision from NCSU, however, I was deferred until late March. What are my chances to still be accepted into NCSU with this status:

Out of state Residency
White
Major- Engineering Undeclared Intent

I have taken an AP Calculus class along with multiple honors courses (but next semester I am taking AP Chemistry and AP Physics). I managed to get an A in Calculus along with an A in practically all of my honors courses throughout high school.

UGPA-3.8796
WGPA- 4.1957

SAT Scores:
Test 1: CR 470 Math 670 WR 450
Test 2: CR 480 Math 640 WR 550
(I am usually very good with taking tests but I seem not to do very well on standardized tests.)

Activities/Organizations etc:
Varsity Lacrosse- 9th-12th grade (captain 10th-12th)
Volunteer work at a church during 10th and 11th grade
Minor volunteer work at my school and some volunteer work watching kids in the elementary school
Worked on a small privately owned farm from 7th grade up through my senior year
Certified Scuba Diver
Take part in my friend's team (who has type 1 diabetes) for the JDRF Diabetes Walk annually

Awards:
2nd Place, as team leader, on an aeronautical design challenge to design and test an aircraft's wing
STEM: Award for Outstanding achievement (was from the challenge above)

How can I improve my chances of acceptance? I know my SAT scores could be improved, but what else? In my current classes (Honors Physics, English, Engineering Design & Manufacturing, and Psychology) I have straight A's. Is there anything else I can do to strengthen my application?

You need at least a 1750.

SAT is probably the biggest downfall, as you have mentioned. It is also more difficult to get accepted OOS in a program as competitive as engineering. I am sorry to hear about your deferral, but let it be known that they obviously see potential or they would have rejected you. The best advice I have for you is to continue to do well in your classes, attempt the SAT again or try the ACT and keep State updated on your updates and well doing. They posted a blog the other night on how to interpret admission decisions, and what to do. You can find this on the admission page. There is also a FAQ page. I believe last year they accepted 28% of those deferred EA. Best of luck to you, and hang in there!

im also applying to NCSU but im applying regular decision. If you were deferred it means your stats were not bad but they want to compare them to all the applicant pool (regular decision applicants) therefore your chances depend on how good the applicants are for this year. But with your stats i think you have a good gpa, but your sat is a BIG downfall, ECs are good. You should send them your mid-year report if it is good (it should be) and retake the sat for ONE last time on january 26 i think, or do the act if you think youll do better in that test. you would have all winter to study and you should be doing much better. also, ask teachers for recommendation letters as it might help and send in an essay if you are a good writer. If you do these, ESPECIALLY raise your test scores, you should be accepted.

you can compare your stats with mine as im also applying to NCSU and chance me, please?

Thanks for the replies, I am taking the SATs again in January to turn in my results in February. I’m trying to get above 1750 and JustinBryce where did you get that number from?

simonferro I have been told my a few people that NCSU doesn’t look at letters of recommendation from teachers (one of them being the head of admissions) so I don’t think I will do that, but if I were to send in an essay of my own who should I send it to and what should I write it about?
