Deferred from U of M Ann Arbor, should I still retake the ACT?

Hello!
I was deferred from U of M Ann Arbor, and I have been debating whether or not to retake the February 8th ACT. I am worried that the report won't get in on time, as they said they should be releasing final decisions by early April. I plan to send them a letter with updates of new extracurriculars and projects I'm in and my fall semester grades. I'm trying to look on the bright side of things (it's better than being rejected?), and it's very bittersweet since many close friends made it in. Anyway, thanks in advance to any help! Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.8 (unweighted)
ACT: 27
Great essays (in my opinion) and a great rec letter (from my AP Biology teacher that I now have for Honors Zoology)
EC: Student Council, Link Crew, Ambassadors, Interact Club (a volunteer club), Diversity Club
I plan to start volunteering at a hospital or an elderly home and be part of a mentor program (both of which I will include in my letter to them). However I am second guessing even sending them a letter because of this part of the deferral letter: "Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require." I'd like to let them know that I'm still very interested, and I've read that it helps your chances to let keep them updated.

Here's the rest of the deferral letter if it matters:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2014. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2014.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,
Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

Thanks again for any advice!

Definitely retake it.
