I have fairly competitive stats. 34 ACT, 2240 SAT, 4.2 GPA, 9 APs, 800 Math 2.
Really didn’t expect to be deferred. My main concern is my essay where I talked about why I wanted to do computer science but I didn’t mention UIUC in it at all. Could that be an explanation of why?
Deferred from Systems Engineering. But I had put Business as my second choice major.
Stats: ACT: 31, GPA ~ 3.5 UW/ 4.2 W, 10 AP, Rest Honors, EC: Several Clubs, Leadership positions, several volunteering
Waiting for Purdue, Univ of Minnesota Twin cities
Got acceptance from Iowa State Engg, Bradley, UI
Applying to : OSU, MSU, UIC, UW, Penn State
your academics seems average for uiuc college of engineering, but below average ACT for CS. Also, your lack of EC could have played a huge role. They are looking for well rounded students
I wouldn’t call UIUC CS a safety school. The acceptance rate for CS is low, along with all of the good applicants that apply to CS as they have similar stats to you, many with great CS ECs.
@3CsinLife Thank you I understand that now. I didn’t do enough research and didn’t realize it was so competitive. I’ve definitely learned my lesson from this experience.
If you were deferred please send a letter of continued interest and any updates to your application if appropriate. And find some other safety schools that you can afford and would be willing to attend. There are plenty of other good options out there.
Send a letter if continued interest but apply widely, looking at acceptance rates - anything 20% and below is to be considered reaches for anyone due to the unpredictability of the selection at such high levels.
Carleton, Grinnell? Those are reaches too but you’re well within range.
Indiana U school of Informatics would be a good safety but you missed the merit deadline.
Just for reference, I was accepted to UIUC CS with a 34 ACT, 4.47 GPA, and a total of 6 APs (my school doesn’t offer very many though) as well as several honors courses. I had some volunteering (really just peer tutoring at my high school) and one leadership position within a club I’ve been involved in for four years.
Also, for further reference, my school only offers a total of 8 AP classes (the other two being music theory and psychology), and all of my classes are either honors, AP, or computer-based (except gym which is required by the state of Illinois).
