Deferred from WFU. Any advice?

It seems you would be a natural fit for the University of Richmond.

Do you have an intended major?

We really should not turn this into a debate. It’s not in the interests of the OP.

Just on the factual level, I’d like to clear up a couple of points. First, if you re-read my post, you’ll see that I suggested that she submit a letter of continued interest in January or February. If she chooses to ED II elsewhere, then obviously the time to submit the letter to WFU Is late February after ED II notifications have been sent and only if she is still pursuing WFU.

Second, a student’s stated intent to attend is not a commitment that binds her to the school if financial aid is not made. She already did that when she applied ED, and that commitment has passed.

I should also note that ED rates are inflated by admitted athletes, so the advantage of ED has to be assessed on a school by school basis.

I certainly agree that any deferred student has to move on after being deferred in ED, but I think that students are capable of keeping more than one ball in the air at a time. We just went through this with a member of my family 2 years ago and she had no problem doing both.

An intent to attend is an advantage that a deferred ED applicant has over other applicants in the regular admit process. Reminding the college of that demonstrated intent and stating that it still holds is not an advantage that I would give away lightly. Just MYC 2 cents.

I will not comment on this thread further.

Stating that one will attend if accepted during a RD round directly contradicts any ED II application.

P.S. Another thread may be of interest:

“Colleges where applying RD may not be worth the bother”

Something that gets lost in single school fixation threads is budget. Be sure it won’t hurt your family if you do get it.

So where else did you apply? Maybe we can help find a plan B. Might be better to start new thread?

For what it’s worth my S20 was deferred EA from Georgia Tech. Admitted RD and just finished finals this morning. He didn’t like WF when we visited but I did.

University of Miami could be a plan B. A friend’s daughter just graduated. Loved it. Work hard, play hard. Similar to WF.

As mentioned above, the University of Richmond might be of interest to OP. However, OP has not shared what aspects of WFU are attractive to OP.

My daughter was deferred at Miami and then admitted with the same $25k merit those accepted in EA got. If your stats are in range, it’s certainly a possibility.

But as others point out, other than re expressing your interest and updating grades, you have to let the school slip out if your mind and start finding others.

Hopefully there’s interest in every school one applies to or you shouldn’t have applied.

If awake happens great. If it doesn’t then life will go on.

No school is perfect. Many transfer out of their perfect school every year. Maybe the roommate was not good or you had profs you didn’t understand Or you just find it’s not right.

Don’t fall in love. Give appreciation to the ones that appreciate you. That may or may not be Wake but it can be so many other schools from Richmond to Rochester to Miami to so many including your safeties…hopefully you have two.

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. I would say the main things that attracted me to Wake were the location, the campus, the wide variety of classes, and the fact they it has both a good law and business school on campus(I think that’s what I love the most). Also I know so many amazing people who have gone there and absolutely love it. As of right now I think Richmond shares the most similarities with Wake, and I applied there EA, but I’m worried I won’t get in there either considering the two schools have similar applicants and acceptance rates. Thank you so much for all the help and contributions you’ve made!

I applied there EA actually! It’s a gorgeous campus! I’m just worried that I won’t get in there either because it’s very similar to Wake. As for majors I intend to either major in business or some sort of pre-law major, but I’m leaning more towards pre-law. Thank you!

As of now I’ve applied to Richmond EA, Furman EA, and SMU RD.

As for places I’m considering applying I’m thinking of Rhodes, Trinity, Clemson, University of Maryland, William and Mary, UM, Elon, Tulane, GW. I definitely need to do more research on someone of them though. I initially thought I wanted to go somewhere in the south, but I’m also trying to look at colleges from all over the place now.

That seems like a good list of possibilities. I would add Miami of Ohio. It’s less than 50 miles north of the Kentucky border, and it’s another “public ivy” like W&M (but more affordable and an easier admit), with a business school and a robust pre-law program, and they’re generous with merit. Get an app in quickly if you want to consider it, because the priority deadline for merit was December 1st (but merit is still possible).

U of Delaware is another - smaller flagship, not too far north, with a suburban private-ish vibe.

Maybe Syracuse U, but that would really be venturing into the cold.

Based on some of the preferences you have indicated in your topic here, you may want to look into Trinity, in Connecticut. While it doesn’t have a business major, it does offer versatile majors (e.g., economics) that can be suitable for either pre-law or pre-business interests, such as your own.

A concern with respect to Trinity might be the location.

Thank you! I’m trying to expand my list to include different regions, so this is much appreciated! It doesn’t hurt to just apply.

Great list but note deadlines. For example if you didn’t apply to UMD early action you won’t get in (almost certainly).

Elon is gorgeous. In my opinion way nicer than Richmond. And the name is becoming more known nationally.

W&M RD from OOS tough. As @aquapt said Miami is a bigger W&M. We literally thought that as we toured. It’s isolated. Campus is similar. But we saw is W&M in many ways although it’ll be more a party school.

U might add Miami of Florida and Denver. Ithaca College is another.

If you want to go South there’s huge money (merit) and a lot of geographic diversity and smart people (most NMFs in the country) at Alabama. UAH would be smaller like a Wake (a tad bigger) but similar office park feel…bcuz of the parking lots everywhere that was our impression of Wake Which my daughter disliked. Miss State and Arkansas also have great merit. App State in NC is another to look at and if you like urban, College of Charleston which is smaller than the large publics you now mention. My daughter bff turned down Rice to go there.

Pre law is advising and not a major. So find your interest whether it’s international studies, physics, business or nutrition. Poli sci is popular (but not necessary) and philosophy and English are solid to develop critical thinking and writing skills. But law school doesn’t require a specific major. So if you decide you like, let’s say journalism, then u can do it.

Any schools you look at…study the deadlines. Some are near impossible to get into after the early dates…UMD etc and others will be past the merit deadline.

Good luck.

This is super helpful! Thank you so much
