Deferred... now what?

I too have maintained my GPA while taking AP, CCP, + Honors courses, working a job and playing two sports in one season (cheerleading and cross country)

@MYOS1634 No I didn’t retake that one because I knew I wouldn’t improve because I barely had time to study so I didn’t want to waste money. Thing is in my midyear it’ll show that during first semester I got a 4.59 Weighted GPA and my overall GPA went up to a 3.95 Weighted. Do you think this will better my chance of acceptance since I can’t do much about my ACT score.

@laurenellierose0 what’s your ACT?

ACT 26
GPA 3.8
20/135 class rank

@laurenellierose0 I would suggest that you send a “letter of continued interest” to admissions and, preferably, to your ASSIGNED admissions counselor for OSU. The assigned counselor reviews your information. You can look up samples online of letters/emails. Your grades/ACT are not bad but probably average for what goes through their office. You have to understand that they receive 50,000 applications and MANY have your stats. For some reason you did not stand out but, remember, you were also NOT DENIED. You will be reviewed again. You need to state that it is your #1 choice, 1st semester went well (assuming it did) and that you will have your counselor send in your 1st semester senior year grades (showing no senioritis, hopefully). If you are willing to go to another campus, you can state that but I wouldn’t unless you are OK with that. Thank them for the opportunity to be reviewed again and throw in a “GO Buckeyes!” at the end.

I had one son go through the college process last year and another one is going through it currently. Commitments are not due until May 1, he did not commit until mid-April. He is living in a dorm and has a roommate. Everything will work out! Keep your options open with other schools. Send the letter and enjoy your Senior year!

@HM0416 I think your ACT is your issue. You were NOT DENIED which is good. See my previous comment to laurenellierose0 about a “letter of continued interest”. You may want to send one and consider a branch campus for a year (if you really want to go there). Definitely have your HS counselor send your mid year grades. I think OSU superscores the ACT so you doing it again would have helped, particularly if you had a low score in math. You could have focused on sections. My son was admitted last year to the college of Engineering with a 3.95GPA and a 31 ACT/32 super. I think a 27 or 28 ACT would have helped you. Send a letter but, keep your options open with other schools and enjoy your Senior year!

Good advice @BreakfastClub1 One small clarification - I don’t think OSU superscores. Their admissions site doesn’t mention their policy on this.

@HM0416 @Banker1 Thank you for correcting me. Between all the schools I forget who does and does not super, sorry for the misinformation. So, additional personal test preparation or an ACT prep course is a must! At this point it may be too late but, definitely have your counselor get your semester grades in and write a letter. Good Luck!

Thank you all very much! I appreciate the information, as I need it. I have already sent a follow up letter. I stated that Ohio State is my number one choice and I am very eager to attend. My grades have been maintained (including taking an AP course- which I have never done, and CCP and honors courses). I will continue with a 3.8 equivalent GPA, and hopefully this shows to OSU admissions. I am excited to hear back. I have decided on Ohio University as my new school, however I hope it is evident how enthusiastic I am about the Ohio State University.

If OSU doesn’t work out for this year, throw yourself into Ohio U but keep in the back of your mind that you can apply next spring as a transfer if OSU is still your goal.

Sample of 1: good family friend liked OSU but thought her stats were too low and didn’t even apply while in high school. She really wanted Ohio U but did not get in. Spent Year 1 at Bowling Green, applied to OSU as a transfer and was accepted for Year 2. She’s very happy there.

Usually I don’t advocate for even thinking about transferring when you first start college (and your positive approach to Ohio U is great), but it may be an option.

That’s awesome. I appreciate hearing real-life stories, and I understand transferring is an option, and quite frankly one I am very much considering. I have an amazing opportunity at Ohio University through the Scripps Program, however when you know somewhere is your home, like tOSU, it is hard to feel settled somewhere else. Does anyone have any idea who I will hear from Ohio State?

I was also deferred with Ohio State being one of my top schools. My school does not report GPA but it would be about a 3.8 W (sick a lot of high school, upward trend). and a 32 C ACT in one sitting. I am out of state and my school does not send many people to Ohio State ( I go to a top ten private school in my state). What are my chances of getting in regular? I applied to Fisher.

@BreakfastClub1 I have already written a letter of interest to my assigned admission counselor but she hasn’t replied yet. I have also gotten my counselor to send my midyear which is getting sent soon and my first semester grades do show I’m capable of getting into engineering (I was able to get an 96% in AP calc and an 85 in AP physics as well as A’s in my college courses and additional classes. I wanted to retake the ACT in February but I asked OSU admissions and they said they won’t accept those scores so I just have to rely on my grades at this point. Do you think I could possible get admitted to tOSU but not into the college of engineering but then get put into pre-engineering courses? Because you are right with ACT being my issue. I do think the rest of my application is very good with a good essay and recommendations.

@Hm0416 I wouldn’t necessarily expect a reply from your letter. You have said what you can and are having your 1st semester grades sent in. I really do not know how they will handle you or where you would be put if it was not in the engineering school. You should call admissions and ask that question.

Many would be successful at OSU but the problem is the # of applications coming in with higher stats. The 24 ACT is going to hurt you unless you have something very special elsewhere. With that said, you must have had something because you were deferred and NOT denied. That is good. I’m sorry to be so blunt. OSU is not the only school with a good engineering program. You need to have a back up plan. I am under the assumption you have some safeties? If you have received other acceptances, schedule your “accepted student days”.

My son got a flat out rejection from his ‘dream school’. It was a typical form letter saying how wonderful of a student he was, lots of applications came in…hard decision and, basically, good luck. It was not a fun couple days but, he got other acceptances and some safeties that have sent him additional scholarship apps and requested interviews for different programs. One school was on the bottom of the list but he wants to go back and revisit because of the extra things that have offered. Get excited for the process! You have done all that you can do! Now, enjoy your senior year!

@BreakfastClub1 I’m going to assume it must have been my essay (it was about my background and my experience moving to America) and I’ll also benefit from OSU’s pell grant scholarship which could help too. I’ve already been accepted into Miami U and Ohio University and now I’m waiting on a couple others. I just really want to get into OSU because of how close it is to home and the chance it will give me a full ride. Thanks for your help though, now I just have wait.

Why do you think tOSu might give you a full ride?
(it seems pretty unlikely to me but there may be more to it - perhaps you signed for something like “Ohio Promise” in 8th or 9th grade? A special program?)
Have you applied to test optional schools?
I recommend you apply test-optional to WPI, an excellent Engineering school outside of Boston. It’s risk-free: if you’re admitted there and tOSU, you get to pick!

@MYOS1634 osu is going to be offering pell grant recipients full tuition I believe. They announced they will be doing that next year. I also applied to morrill so I’m not sure if I’ll be getting that scholarship but I definitely think I could be getting full tuition since my family doesn’t make as much.
