Would love some input from people who are more informed than I. I was accepting (and am planning on at attending OSU) as a transfer student this fall. I am coming in after two years at a smaller private university, where I majored in Journalism. Besides the fact that I was extremely unhappy with the price, school spirit, administration, and classes at my past school, I wanted to go somewhere better for me to pursue a career in Journalism. I am particularly, no,only interested in sports broadcasting, and was completely underserved in that at my last school. I applied to Ohio State because I thought a larger school would have a more robust program and more opportunities to pursue broadcast. I was particularly interested in Ohio State because of The Lantern and Buckeye TV, two of the largest outlets in all of college and are faculty-facilitated.

My concern, however, is if I am doing myself a disservice by not going to a premier Journalism school. Besides Ohio State, I have considered Texas (Austin), University of Florida, Wisconsin, and Indiana. I have settled on Ohio State, honestly, because I was admitted. I only applied to OSU and Indiana for the fall, if I wanted to take a shot at different school, I would need to wait to apply for the spring, and there are no guarantee I would get in to any of them. The thing is, I have no idea what the Journalism program at Ohio State is like. I have been doing a lot of research, looking at the professors, the classes, the syllabi, recent alumni, etc, and it looks be fine, but there is almost nothing that jumps out at me as very unique to the school and sets it apart from some of the nationally-regarded programs. I am completely prepared to go there with an open mind, work hard, and cultivate the experience so it works for me, but I am cautious to not put myself at a disadvantage before even starting.

Does anyone know anything to help? I really would prefer advice other than “wait another semester and reapply.” My parents do not want me to go back to my old school, and would be very nervous if I deferred because OSU does not guarantee admission if you do. It is also harder to transfer in the spring as there are fewer spots. I should mention I have already taken more than one semester off from college for health reasons, so returning to school as soon as possible is one of my top priorities.

Besides the Journalism school, I am pleased with Ohio State. I like the favorable price, Columbus seems nice, and I will get all the school pride I want in going there. I don’t get the feeling that I would be treated as cattle compared to the University of Florida, where transfer students are only allowed to stay for 4+1 semesters and are limited in their ability to declare and change majors, which I did not want to be restricted to. I should mention that I have not yet heard from Indiana, and am operating under the assumption I will not be going there.

Whatever advice anyone can give is much appreciated.
