I applied for early action and then was deferred to regular decision. My weighted GPA is 4.01 unweighted is 3.88, number 4 in my graduating class of over 250. I have taken 30 hours of college classes at my high school. My ACT score is low it is a 20, 21 in science, 20 in reading, 19 in math, 18 in english. I am wondering if I still have a chance of getting in.
Wow that is a wide gap between GPA and ACT scores. I can tell you that the number one thing UMass looks at is GPA. That is in your favor but your ACT is very low. My son got in last year but his GPA was 3.3 (weighted) and his SAT was a 1290 (1950 with writing which UMass doesn’t look at). He was deferred also and didn’t get admitted to his first choice which was Sports Management. He got admitted undeclared. So if you do get admitted it probably won’t be to your fist choice. They know you are a hard worker as displayed by your very high GPA and top 1% of your class. I think they lean toward the hard worker but its going to be close. It really just depends on who submitted apps during RD. Good luck.
I can tell you that my son just loves UMass and he didn’t even consider school where he was admitted right into a sports management program.
Ya,
Everything but the ACT looks good, it’s going to depend on the Admissions team.
Good Luck
You’ll get in
@fallenwinter - We don’t know that, but like I said his GPA is quite solid. The average ACT at UMass this year will likely be 28 and OP has a 20. This being said, he/she might have great EC’s that push them in.
I say this because of a friend of mine who had a high GPA, but really low SATs around the same range as his ACT got in. That was 2 years ago of course, so maybe I was being a bit too optimistic. But OP I think you have a good chance.
Ya, I hope OP gets in as well. We just can’t promise anything. lol
what does your gpa go up to? at my school it goes up to 5.0 and if they is the case im confused as to how you could be number 4 in the class with a 4.1 gpa
Have any deferred students heard back yet?
@logain713 I don’t expect to hear from UMass until next week. DS’s Spire account changed to “under review” on Tuesday. Being super optimistic maybe a letter will come this Saturday. Being deferred is really a rotten deal for those that applied early to hear early!
Thankfully, UMass A is not our first choice. But it is the only school that we are waiting on right now…
@SQBrit Being deferred sucks! I was deferred from the Isenberg so I’m hoping, I hear back soon!
@SQBrit I am surprised you haven’t heard already. My son now has umass Amherst as one of his top three choices. Disappointed to learn that they won’t have the chance to start a band together… so, which school is the current top choice?
@CanIgoback - thanks for asking! DS squeaked into Virginia Tech - accepted to engineering - a sure sign that miracles can happen (to anxious mothers that is!). We are still waiting on Umass Amherst but the major he applied to was biochemistry. My gut tells me he will love VT over umass Amherst but I could be wrong. The college app process has been full of surprises and I’m not placing bets anymore!
@sqbrit My son tossed around the idea of biomedical engineering when Wentworth sent him a letter with a free invitation to apply. I then said, well if you are going to apply there, then why not some other better schools for engineering. In the end, he got into them but it wasn’t what he wanted. He’s pretty set on premed so he’s going to stick to the sciences. When we went to the Stonybrook reception they told me that their biomedical engineering program which he got into was their most competitive major and he could switch to pre med anytime. He’s now favoring Umass and we will be visiting to confirm the choice. I like the fact that he can take classes at Amherst and Mount Holyoke if he wants, and Amherst is a great college town. I wish he had gotten his rejection and waitlist earlier, as he still had hope for those schools, particularly the one he was rejected from. It’s killing me because his test scores are so high, but that gpa nixed him.
@canlgoback - My son also wants to try for med school. he is strong in math and science but because med school is not a sure bet we thought an engineering degree would be a good strategy. Wish I had known sooner how hard it was to get into engineering!
Honestly who knows how this will end? students are known to switch majors - flirting with their options (and at their tender ago who can blame them!?) so it makes sense to seriously consider costs. Such experimentation is a lot more affordable at a state school. I’m not sure how I would feel if he switched from engineering at Virginia tech to …let’s say biology. Now, at Umass Mass Amherst? His state school … Not so bad. Get my point?
@sqbrit I totally get your point…wish he would go to UConn, cheaper for me…
